Esther V. Zulaica, 89, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012, at Mercy Hospice in Iowa City.
A funeral mass was held 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in West Liberty. Visitation was held on Monday at the church. Burial was at Oak Ridge Cemetery in West Liberty.

Esther was born March 4, 1923, in Zaragoza, Mexico, to Juan and Clara Velasquez Valdez. She was united in marriage to Ygnacio Zulaica in 1938. She had been employed with West Liberty Foods in West Liberty.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in West Liberty. Her passion was making sure all her family was well cared for.
Survivors include three children: Homer Zulaica; Eustolia (Emelio) Partida; and Esther (Jose) Renteria, all of West Liberty; nine grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ygnacio; two daughters, Tomasita Palacios and Zulema Zulaica; daughter-in-law, Lucille Zulaica; three sisters, Hermina, Manuela and Eloda; and a brother, Heriberto; three grandsons, Armando Partida, Lee Partida and Ignacio Palacios; and one great-granddaughter, Azariel Rae Zulaica.
