Volleyball starts strong|

The West Liberty volleyball team won their first Cedar Valley Conference match of the season, taking down the Tipton Tigers in four games August 30 at West Liberty.
The Comets won game one 25-14 though the Tigers kept it close early. With the score tied at 3, Kennedi Simon and Sydney Warson got a block to put the Comets ahead, and they kept the lead. Nine of the Comets’ remaining points were scored on Tipton mistakes. Highlights of the game included a serving streak by K. Simon to take the Comets to 24-13. The final point of the match came on a Tipton hit into the net.
Tipton looked like a different team in game two, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. A kill by Kathy Kaalberg scored the Comets’ first point. The Comets got another point on a Tipton serving error to make it 2-4, then the Tigers went on a run, scoring five consecutive points on two kills, two aces, and a block. A kill by Sydney Warson stopped their streak, but a West Liberty serving error and a hit in the net made it 3-11, Tipton. The Tigers scored on a West Liberty error, then an error by Tipton gave the Comets a point. Warson got another kill, Kristi Feldman placed the ball for a point, then Feldman got a block, and the Comets were climbing back into the game.
West Liberty scored two more points to make it 9-12, Tipton, and the Tigers took a time out. They scored the first three points after the time out, then a net violation called on Tipton made it 10-15, Tipton. Warson served up two consecutive aces, then a kill attempt by the Comets went out of bounds. The Comets tied the game at 17 after a fierce volley. A net violation gave the edge to the Tigers, then a Tipton block attempt sent the ball out of bounds, and the score was tied at 18. A serving error by West Liberty was followed by a serving error by Tipton to tie the game at 19. The Tigers got the next point then two more on aces. The Comets called a time out, then made an error for a 19-23 score. Cassedi Simon placed the ball for a Comets point, then two Tipton errors made it 22-23, Tipton. The Tigers called a time out then scored two quick points on a soft tip over and an ace for the win.
“I think we controlled our own loss in the second game,” West Liberty Head Coach Melissa Brockway said. “I thought we were not managing our errors well, and we let Tipton run the pace of the match. It was hard for us to keep up once we gave someone the power to lead the pace of the match.”
The Comets scored first in game three on a kill by K. Simon. A Tipton kill tied it up, then a kill by Kaalberg gave the Comets the lead, and they kept it the rest of the game. The Comets surged ahead, but Tipton fought back, coming to within one point three times, the last one at 13-12, before the Comets pulled ahead. Tipton had a net serve, then Cassedi Simon surprised the Tigers with a second-touch tip for a point. A West Liberty serving error was followed by a placement by K. Simon for a 16-13 score. Feldman, Warson, and Kaalberg had kills as the Comets pulled ahead even more. The final West Liberty point came on an ace by Marissa Kelly, amid chants by the West Liberty fans of “uno mas,” and the Comets won 25-18.
In the fourth game, Tipton scored first on a block, but the Comets scored the next nine points, including two on aces by Hayley Simon. Tipton scored two points on a block and a kill then a K. Simon kill made it 10-3, Comets. The teams traded points, then Tipton went on a streak, tying the game at 12. The Tigers took a brief lead at 13-14 when a West Liberty kill attempt went out of bounds. They led by two after a kill of their own, then a Tipton net violation and two kill tries by the Tigers that went out of bounds gave the Comets at 16-15 lead. An ace by Molly Kelly and two errors by Tipton made it 19-15, and the Tigers called a time out. When play resumed, Molly Kelly got another ace, Tipton made two errors, and K. Simon got another kill for a 23-15 tally. A West Liberty player hit the ball out of bounds, then K. Simon scored a point for the Comets on a soft tip. The Tigers got a kill down right on the line for a point, then a West Liberty kill try went out of bounds for a 24-18 score. The final point of the game and match came on a net violation by Tipton.

The Comets had 13 aces and 35 kills in their non-conference match at Cal-Wheat. Hayley Simon had four digs and shined serving wtih 25-26 including four aces. Kennedi Simon led with 11 kills and had 10-11 serving including three aces. Marissa Kelly had eight kills, five digs, 9-10 serving and two aces. Sydney Warson had eight kills with three digs and 5-5 serving including an ace. Grace Jedlicka led the team in digs with seven and was 1-1 serving. Molly Kelly was 4-4 serving. Cassedi Simon had 32 assists and was 6-8 serving including three aces.

Muscatine Invitational September 1
The Comets won one and lost two at the Muskie tourney. They beat Williamsburg in two games and lost to Clinton and Davenport Assumption, both in two games. Clinton is a 5A school, and Davenport Assumption is a private 3A school. Maddie Simon had three aces against Williamsburg. Cassedi Simon had 13 assists, and Kennedi Simon led in kills with six against Williamsburg.
