The West Liberty Comets volleyball team beat Collins-Maxwell-Baxter in three sets in the regional semi-final game Oct. 25 at Williamsburg. With the win, the Comets (28-9) advance to the match they’ve been looking forward to: The regional final against volleyball powerhouse Mount Vernon (26-10), set for Oct. 30, at Cedar Rapids Jefferson at 7 p.m.
The Williamsburg gym was quiet until the West Liberty student fans arrived partway through the match. The action was slower than the Comets are accustomed to, but West Liberty made the adjustments nicely, winning 25-10, 25-17, 25-10.
The Comets scored the first five points in the first set on an CMB error, a kill by Kennedi Simon, an ace by Molly Kelly, another Raiders’ error, and a kill by Sydney Warson, The Raiders scored a point on a kill. K. Simon got another kill, then West Liberty scored a point when a CMB player hit the ball out of bounds. A West Liberty error and a CMB ace made it 7-4, West Liberty. K. Simon got a kill, the Comets made an error, then the Raiders hit the ball into the net. The Raiders passed a serve by K. Simon but did not return it. Two CMB errors made it 12.5, and the Raiders called a time out.
