It was a game of streaks, high hopes and heartbreaks, and the West Liberty football team came out on top in their first round playoff game against the Blue Devils of Albia on the road Oct. 24. The final score was 42-37. It was played to the final moments, and both teams left it all on the field.

West Liberty kicked off to begin the game, and Raudel Fierro’s kick was returned to the 29. The Blue Devils got a first down on three running plays, then Bryan DeBock got a stop, Tyler Newsom pressured the Albia quarterback, and the Blue Devils fumbled. Albia recovered, but it was fourth and 19, and they punted. Ty Williams had a nice return to the 45 yard line. An encroachment penalty on Albia made it first and five at midfield for the Comets. Newsom passed the ball to Becker who made it to the one-yard line. Becker scored a touchdown on second and goal on a pass from Newsom. Fierro’s PAT kick was good, and the Comets led 7-0 with 7:42 left in the first quarter.

The Blue Devils returned Fierro’s kickoff to the 46. The Comets defense put a lot of pressure on the quarterback. He was hit hard by Becker and fumbled the ball. Israel Montelongo recovered the ball for the Comets, and it was first and 10 at the Albia 45.
