A Veterans Day ceremony was held on Sunday at American Legion Mansell L. Phillips Post 509. Commander George Alt said Mansell Phillips was the first man from the West Liberty area to lose his life during WWI.
Former West Liberty High School history teacher Ken Donnelly started out the ceremony with a welcoming speech. He told the audience he first became aware of Veterans day as a second grader. He then explained the meaning of Armistice Day and read an article printed on the front page of the West Liberty Index on November 14, 1918, titled “Old Wapsie Goes Wild! All Join in Peace Celebration-Day and Night Given Over to Jollification.”
The article says the quiet town of West Liberty morphed on the night the armistice was signed and World War I ended.
