Building is booming

Both the Giri and Akers families are making big changes to the look of West Liberty with their new buildings on the main drag through town. The Giri BP station is mostly finished, save the gas pumps. The Akers project on Highway 6, on the west side of the street from Casey’s, is going up quickly. If his past projects are any indicator, it will probably look a lot like his buildings elsewhere along the road.

Meanwhile, it looks like a new condominium development is planned a few blocks south of the elementary school.

The city is considering a property maintenance code at the council meeting on Tuesday night. We hope is passes, and is the first step on a path to even more comprehensive zoning codes.

We’ve been lucky so far to have builders who live in and love this community putting up projects. Let’s make sure that when even more people start to build here, they have our best interest in mind too. If only because the codes say so.

Open House

This weekend is a great opportunity to support local businesses while having plenty of fun. The West Liberty Chamber of Commerce is hosting the annual Holiday Open House. Chamber members across the community will be having special events, snacks, drinks and sales to celebrate the occasion.

Here at the Index we’ll be writing letters to Santa and hanging children’s drawings (see page 11) in our windows. We’ll also have representatives of the West Liberty 175th Anniversary Committee selling official T-shirts.
