Darlene M. Toussaint, 87, passed from this life with family at her side on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at Kavanaugh House Hospice in Des Moines. She was born April 18, 1925, in Silvis, Ill., to Clarence and Ada (Steckman) Cracraft.
Following graduation from Muscatine Community High School, Darlene worked as a telephone operator in Muscatine. She married her high school sweetheart, Herbert C. Toussaint, on Dec. 20, 1943, during his leave from the Navy during World War II. They were happily married for 66 years until Herb’s death on April 24, 2010.
For 21 years, Herb and Darlene operated the TV and Appliance Mart in West Liberty. After the sale of their store, they were both employed by the University of Iowa. Following retirement to Southern Missouri, Darlene cared for her mother and volunteered at the local animal shelter.
In 2010, Darlene moved to Waukee where she resided near family.
She is survived by her son, David (Leona) Toussaint of Mountain View, Mo.; daughters, Nancy (William) Carpenter of Naperville, Ill., and Kitty (Terry) Olsen of West Des Moines; grandchildren John Toussaint and fiancé Liz Shinall, Jeff (Nancy) Carpenter, Andrew (Kat) Carpenter, Amy (Mike) Tackett, Eric Olsen, Tim (Sara) Olsen; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert; parents, Clarence and Ada Cracraft; sister, Bonnie Keith; and grandson, Mark Toussaint.
A celebration of life and private burial will be held at the Island Cemetery in Muscatine at a date to be determined by family. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Character Counts in Iowa or your local animal shelter.
