West Liberty joins new conference

It seems like realignment isn’t just for college football. Say goodbye to the Cedar Valley Conference, West Liberty will be joining the newly formed River Valley Conference in all sports except football.

“It should be one of the top 2A conferences in the state,” said West Liberty High School athletic director James Laughlin.

A process that started two years ago when Camanche was denied entrance to the Cedar Valley Conference culminated with a 13-team league split into north and south divisions. West Liberty is in the southern division with West Branch, Iowa City Regina, Tipton, Mid-Prairie, Wilton and Durant. The northern division is comprised of Bellevue, Camanche, Cascade, Monticello, North Cedar and Northeast Goose Lake.

Laughlin expects it will be a “fun league to be a part of.
