Boy hoopsters defeat Lisbon

The West Liberty boys’ basketball team defeated the Lisbon Lions 53-52 in a hard-fought thriller at West Liberty Nov. 27.

The tip went West Liberty’s way, and Kyle Miller scored two for the Comets to start the scoring. Lisbon worked for a basket, missed, and Tyler Newsom got the defensive board. The Comets missed a shot, and the ball went to the Lions. A jump shot tied the game at 2. Newsom got a putback basket, then Lisbon made two free throws to tie it at four. Ty Williams shot from the outside for two, then Brett Becker got a steal. The Comets turned the ball over, but Riley Anderson got the defensive rebound. The Comets traveled then were called for a blocking foul. After another West Liberty foul, the Lions hit the second of two free throws for a 6-5 West Liberty edge. Miller scored on a layup, then Lisbon scored in the paint. The Lions got a defensive rebound and scored again, taking a 9-8 lead. Miller made a layup, assist Israel Montelongo. Montelongo got a defensive rebound, and Becker got a layup for a 12-9 West Liberty lead. A quick three-pointer by the Lions tied it at 12. Lisbon got a steal and a bucket to take back the lead. A defensive rebound and jump shot by the Lions put them up 16-12. Carl Guardado got a layup for the Comets, and the Comets took a time out. Lisbon got a putback basket then Troy Heick scored in the paint for the Comets with about 30 seconds left in the quarter. The Comets missed a shot at the buzzer, and the Lions led 18-16 going into the second quarter.
