Slade Hovick teaches freshman math at West Liberty High School, which according to Hovick, is algebra with a little bit of geometry thrown in. He was recently awarded the Yager Exemplary Mathematics Teaching Award by University of Northern Iowa. The award is to recognize exemplary mathematics teaching by a university graduate who is currently in at least their fifth year of teaching in a K-12 classroom. He was nominated by his friend Dr. Doug Shaw who is also his former professor and improv coach from the university where he earned a B.A. in Math Education in 2006 and a Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology in 2008.
He has worked for West Liberty School District for four years and hopes to stick around here, but said his future might depend on where his girlfriend’s career takes her. He also believes no one can really pinpoint the future.
