Comets knock down Mid-Prairie

The West Liberty Comets boys’ basketball team knocked the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks back on their heels with a 65-52 win on the road at Wellman Jan. 4.

“I was kind of concerned about how we’d play after the break,” West Liberty Head Coach James Laughlin said. “Mid-Prairie had a game last night to get the cobwebs out. We scrimmaged on Monday, but still, you don’t know how you’re going to do when the bullets start flying. I thought our kids really played well.”

Ty Williams scored on an outside shot for the Comets to start the scoring. Mid-Prairie scored a basket to tie, then a defensive rebound and basket gave Mid-Prairie a 4-2 lead. Two Golden Hawk free throws made it 6-2, M-P. A dunk by Williams, assist Brett Becker, made it 6-4. Becker hit a three-point shot at the 4:12 mark to give the Comets a 7-6 lead. A putback basket for Mid-Prairie was answered with an outside shot by Williams, and the Comets had another one-point lead. Williams got a defensive rebound, then he made a putback basket and was fouled. He completed the three-point play for a 12-8 Comets lead.
