Joseph Robert Geertz, 58, a former resident of Muscatine, died on Feb. 1, 2013, in Gainesville, Fla.

He was born on Aug. 10, 1954, in Iowa City, the son of Robert and Myrtle Lendt Geertz. He grew up in Nichols and spent many years living in Muscatine. He relocated to Florida in 2007.

He graduated from West Liberty High School in 1972. During his years in Iowa, he worked for HWH, HON, and several Muscatine area restaurants. He attended First Assembly of God and the Jesus Mission Church while living in Iowa. He became an ordained minister and was active in various ministries while residing in Florida.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Donna Trexler-Geertz of Port Saint Lucie, Fla; son Benjamin Geertz of Muscatine; daughters Jessica (Scott) Bunn of Elgin, Ill. and Rose Geertz of Muscatine; sisters Carolyn (John) Yeater of Muscatine and Viola (Chuck) Kemmerer of Thousand Oaks, Calif; brother Charles (Carolyn) Geertz of Nichols; sister-in-law Marge Classen of Burlington and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Alvin and two siblings in infancy, a brother, Teddy, and a sister, Mary.

A celebration of life gathering was held on Feb. 9, at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall in Muscatine. Online condolences may be sent via www.wittichfuneralhome.com.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family in care of Rose Geertz.
