The application date is approaching for people who wish to partake in West Liberty's community-wide garage sale scheduled for Saturday, May 11.
The West Liberty Chamber of Commerce will accept applications until May 1. People are asked to turn in their address and a brief listing of items they wish to have for sale.
The chamber has hosted this group sale for the past seven years. The project began as a community service event which normally consists of about 25-30 area households and organizations. "It is a good fundraiser for churches and clubs, and some neighbors get together to have neighborhood sales too," chamber board member Priscilla Haessig said.
The chamber plans to create a map and flyers with all the garage sale addresses, which can be picked up one or two days before the sale at Caseys, Giri BP, Fred's Feed and Supply and the two local banks.
The chamber's chief operating officer, Letha Ottaway, said this is an opportunity for the people of West Liberty to come together so people from surrounding communities will have a reason to visit West Liberty. "It would be worth their time and drive to come for multiple sales," Ottaway said. "Anytime you can bring a group of people to town you are hopefully helping all businesses. They might buy gas, food, etc. Plus, it is an opportunity for people to sell stuff they might want to get rid of without going out of town."
People interested in participating can register for $5 at the depot or call 319-627-4876 for more information.
