Raul Martinez Medina, Sr., 65, of Fredonia, died on Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics.
He was born on Dec. 24, 1947 in San Luis Potosí, in the state of San Luis Potosí, the son of Juan Martinez Contreras and Maria Anastasia Medina. Raul was united in marriage to Juana Tapia Zavala de Martinez.
At a young age Raul worked in a bakery and laundromat to help his family. Later he worked in the fields picking tomatoes in Florida; after that he worked in construction. Most recently he worked at Tyson Foods for the last 18 years.
He enjoyed music, especially from the north of Mexico, watching soccer, working on cars and being outdoors. Raul was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Juana; his children, Francisco Martinez Tapia and his wife Kimberly Schulte Martinez of Williamsburg, Raul Martinez Tapia and his wife Cruz Frausto Martinez of Muscatine, Guillermo Martinez Tapia and his wife Trinidad Martinez of Columbus City, Carlos Enrique Martinez Tapia and Irma Tapia de Flores, both of Mexico; 12 grandchildren; two great grandchildren and siblings, Cristina Martinez Medina of Corpus Christi, Texas, Berta Martinez Medina and Margarita Martinez Medina of San Antonio, Texas and Jesus Martinez Medina of Houston, Texas.
Raul was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Aurelio and Juan.
A visitation will be held on Friday, June 7, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home in Columbus Junction. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 8, at the Stacy-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Columbus Junction. Father Joseph Sia will officiate.
