The Comets' softball team went 5-5 from June 17 to 22, bringing their record to 12-13. The Comets had a notable win over Class 3A third-ranked Mid-Prairie, and they won both their home tourney games.
To begin, the Comets couldn't get on the scoreboard Jun 17 against Cedar Valley Conference rivals West Branch, so the Bears' two runs were enough for a victory. The Comets had five singles in the game by Hailey Daufeldt, Merideth Nichols, Hayley Simon, Cassedi Simon, and Shelby Rock. West Liberty pitcher Shelby Martin pitched very well, walking only one and striking out nine.
West Liberty lost 7-2 to an always-tough Wilton team on the road Jun 18. Both the Comets' runs were in the sixth inning. Kayla Kaalberg and Hailey Daufeldt scored the runs while Daufeldt and Kristi Feldman got the RBIs. Daufeldt and Feldman hit doubles for the Comets. Wilton scored two runs in the third and five runs in the fourth for the win.
The Comets handed Mid-Prairie their second conference loss of the season on June 20 with a score of 5 to 3. West Liberty scored three runs in the first inning, forcing the Golden Hawks to play from behind the whole game. Mid-Prairie scored two runs in the third to make it close. The Comets added two insurance runs in the sixth. Mid-Prairie scored one run in the top of the seventh, but they fell short.
Shelby Martin was 2-3 at the plate with a home run and two runs batted in. Audra Bridenstine was 2-3 with two runs scored. Hayley Simon was 2-2 with an RBI. Kayla Kaalbrg also got a hit for the Comets.
After a great win over Mid-Prairie, the Comets fell to North Cedar 2 to 6 at home in two extra innings on June 21. North Cedar scored first with a single run in the fourth inning. The Comets tied it in the bottom of the fifth, then each team scored a run in the sixth for a 2-2 tie. North Cedar won the game with a four-run ninth.
Hailey Daufeldt had the Comets' only extra-base hit, a double and had the two RBIs. Hayley Simon was 2-3 at the plate with a run, a walk and a stolen base. Haddie Anderson was 1-3 and scored the Comets' other run. Shelby Martin was on the mound for the Comets. She went the distance, pitching all nine innings and facing 44 batters.
However, the Comets broke Camanche's seven-game winning streak with an incredible 12 to 3 win at the West Liberty tourney on June 22. Every Comet who played either scored or batted in runs, or both. Kayla Kaalberg scored two runs and had an RBI.
Hailey Daufeldt was 3-3 at the plate with a double, two runs scored, and four RBIs. Audra Bridenstine scored a run. Kristi Feldman hit a double, scored a run, and had two RBIs. Shelby Martin was 3-5 with two RBIs. Merideth Nichols had an RBI and scored a run, and Hayley Simon scored a run. Shelby Rock was 2-3 with a double, a run, and an RBI. Cassedi Simon was 2-3 with a run and an RBI. Emma Baker scored a run.
West Liberty scored one run in the third, and had a break-out inning in the fourth with 11 runs.
Next, the Comets beat WMU during their home tourney 7-2. Kristi Feldman was 2-2 with a triple and RBI. Shelby Martin and Merideth Nichols hit doubles for the Comets. Runs were scored by Kayla Kaalberg, Merideth Nichols, and Hayley Simon. Two runs each were scored by Feldman and Martin.
The Comets got a conference win on the road June 25, allowing just one run for the Tipton Tigers. Hayley Simon was 3-4 at the plate, and Morgan Nichols was 1-1 with a run and an RBI. Hailey Daufeldt had a run and an RBI. Audra Bridenstine had an RBI as well.
They would then go on to lose the following three games, starting with a 3 to 5 loss against Durant-Bennet on June 27.
The Comets led for a time, but a two-run seventh for Lisbon gave them the win on June 28. Shelby Martin, Merideth Nichols, and Morgan Nichols each hit a double for West Liberty. Merideth Nichols and Haddie Anderson scored the Comets runs. Morgan Nichols and Merideth Nichols each had an RBI. Hailey Daufeldt was 3-4 at the plate, and Kristi Feldman was 2-3.
The Comets were 10-runned on June 28 by a talented Pleasant Valley team in five innings. Audra Bridenstine got the Comets' only run.
Finally, the Comets scored four runs in the sixth for a 7-6 win over Charles City on June 29. Audra Bridenstine was 4-4 at the plate wit a run and an RBI. Kayla Kaalberg was 3-4 with two runs and an RBI. Meridth Nichols was 2-3 with a run and an RBI. Hayley Simon had two RBIs. Kristi Feldman and Morgan Nichols each had an RBI for the Comets.
