Wayne Spilger, 91, of Geneva, Fla., formerly of Atalissa, died Thursday, May 9, 2013, at the home of his daughter Janice Sweitzer of Maitland, Fla.
Wayne was born March 12, 1922, in Atalissa, to Phillip and Anna Spilger. In 1942 he married Vivian Schmidt, who preceded him in death.
Mr. Spilger was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Pacific Theater during World War II from 1942 through 1946. He later retired from farming in Iowa. Wayne and Vivian moved to Pasadena, Fla. in 1986, then moved to Geneva, Fla. in 1993 to be closer to their daughter and family.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Bill Sweitzer of Maitland, Fla.; son Richard Spilger of Atalissa; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and surviving brothers, Leland Spilger and Merlyn Spilger, both of Atalissa.
He is preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lucille Spilger Freyermuth of Atalissa; and brother, Harold Spilger of Iowa City.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on July 13, at the Zion Lutheran Church located at 226 Fourth Street, Atalissa. It will be followed later by a gathering of family and friends at the Atalissa Firehouse. Wayne will be interred next to his loving wife in Overman Cemetery, Atalissa.
