The West Liberty Comets' volleyball team faced a much improved from last season Mid-Prairie, Sept. 5, at Wellman. But even though the Golden Hawks were tougher, the Comets still won 3-0.
"I think (Mid-Prairie) out-hustled us tonight," West Liberty Head Coach Ruben Galvan said. "Not something I want to say, but I think they came in and played with a lot of heart, and a lot of times they out-hustled us."
"We need to do a better job coming into (other courts) and taking care of business," he added. You've got to give credit to Mid-Prairie. They were digging a lot of stuff. Our hitters were on, and we were hitting the ball well, but they were digging a lot of stuff."
The first set was the closest of the three, which West Liberty won 25-22.
The set was tied at 1, 2, 4 and 5 in the early going, then the Comets pulled away. Cassedi Simon gave the Comets a 6-5 edge with a second-touch tip, then Mid-Prairie gave the Comets two points with a hit out of bounds and a net violation. Kayla Kaalberg served an ace, and C. Simon had a block. The Comets were up 10-5, and Mid-Prairie called a time out.
Mid-Prairie got a kill, then had a net violation and a call for carrying. West Liberty served out of bounds and had a violation for a 12-8 lead. Kyleigh Becker got a kill, then West Liberty had a net violation. Each team hit the ball into the net, then the Golden Hawks served up two consecutive aces, pulling to within two points at 14-12. Hailey Daufeldt got a kill, then Mid-Prairie got a kill. C. Simon scored for the Comets with a placement, then Daufeldt served an ace.
A couple of West Liberty errors made it 17-15, West Liberty. Mid-Prairie was called for two hits, then a M-P placement, a net violation by the Comets, another M-P placement, and a Mid-Prairie ace gave the Golden Hawks a 19-18 lead. Mid-Prairie got a kill to take a two-point lead, then a kill by Becker and a placement by Audra Bridenstine for the Comets tied the set at 20-20. Mid-Prairie hit the ball out of bounds, then Becker tipped the ball over for a point. West Liberty went under the net, then Becker got another tip and point for a 21-23 West Liberty lead. Mid-Prairie took a time out. A kill by Bridenstine was followed by a serving error by the Comets. The set point was made on a kill by Daufeldt for a 25-22 win.
In the second set, the teams battled back and forth to a 14-14 tie before the Comets went on an eight-point run to take a big lead.
Mid-Prairie took a 2-0 lead to start the set on two West Liberty errors. A Mid-Prairie error and a kill by Daufeldt tied it at 2-2. Mid-Prairie had an error and a tip for a 3-3 tie, then the Golden Hawks had an ace to take a lead. Another Mid-Prairie error tied it at four each. Daufeldt served an ace for a 5-4 Comets lead, then a Mid-Prairie kill tied the game again. Mid-Prairie scored three points on West Liberty miscues, then the Golden Hawks failed to return the ball. A kill by Bridenstine and another Mid-Prairie error tied the set at 8-8.
Two Mid-Prairie errors and a kill and an ace by Mid-Prairie tied it again at 10-10. Mid-Prairie hit the ball out then got a kill for an 11-11 tie. An ace gave the Golden Hawks a one-point lead. Mid-Prairie got a kill, then Meredith Nichols had a kill for the Comets. Maddie Simon's ace tied the set at 13. Mid-Prairie took the lead with a kill, and Bridenstine tied it at 14 with a kill.
Nichols got a kill, then Molly Kelly got a placement for a 16-14 West Liberty lead. The Golden Hawks took a time out. West Liberty scored six more consecutive points on five Mid-Prairie errors and a kill by Daufledt. A serving error gave the serve to Mid-Prairie with a 23-15 West Liberty lead.
Mid-Prairie got an ace, then C. Simon tipped the ball for a West Liberty point. West Liberty needed only one more point, but Mid-Prairie got three consecutive kills for a 24-19 score. The set point came on a long serve by the Golden Hawks. West Liberty won 25-19 and took a 2-0 lead in the match.
West Liberty led the entire third set. Mid-Prairie hit the ball out of bounds, and Kelly served an ace for a 2-1 West Liberty lead. Mid-Prairie got a point on a West Liberty error, then a kill by Daufeldt, a two hits call on Mid-Prairie, and another Daufeldt kill made it 5-1, Comets. Mid-Prairie scored two points on a West Liberty net violation and an ace.
Simon got a tip for a point, and Daufeldt served an ace for a 7-3 Comets lead. West Liberty had two errors, then scored five straight points on a placement by C. Simon, a kill by Bridenstine, a Mid-Prairie error, a C. Simon tip, and an ace by Kaalberg. West Liberty had a 12-5 lead. West Liberty had a net violation, the Bridenstine got a kill, each team was called for two hits, and West Liberty didn't get the ball back over the net. A net violation by the Golden Hawks made it 15-8, West Liberty.
Daufeldt and Bridenstine each got a kill, then West Liberty had a violation. A kill by Daufeldt and a block by Nichols made it 19-9. The Comets hit the ball out of bounds, then Nichols put a kill on the line. Erika Bannavong served an ace for West Liberty for a 21-10 Comets lead. Mid-Prairie called a time out then got two kills.
Daufeldt scored on a placement and Kaalberg scored on a kill for a 23-12 score. Mid-Prairie got a kill, then kills by Kaalberg and Bridenstine ended the set at 25-13 and the match at 3-0.
Mid-Prairie's new coach, Cindy Miller, liked what she saw in her team, but acknowledged they have a way to go.
"My type of game is strong defensively, it tries to tire them out. We're going to meet teams like West Liberty, West Branch next week, and they're going to be powerhouses at the net," she said. "The only way we're going to be able to compete with them right now is to beat them on the floor. If you can beat them on the floor, eventually those hitters are going to be frustrated and then make those errors, and you can kind of work your way back."
