Ronald K. Schafnit, 87, of Bettendorf, died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, at the Bettendorf Health Care Center.
Ronald Keith Schafnit was born Feb. 17, 1926, in Atalissa, the son of Bert and Wilma Schmidt Schafnit. He married Shirley J. Geertz on June 12, 1949, in West Liberty.
Ron attended elementary and high school in Atalissa and later the American Institute of Commerce in Davenport. He retired from ALCOA in 1988 after 35 years of service.
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he had been a member of the choir. Ron sang with the Handel Oratorio Society and was a soloist at many weddings. He volunteered in many capacities at the church and also at Grant Wood Elementary, Bettendorf. He enjoyed music and flower gardening.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley; son, Mark of Bettendorf; grandson, James, of Gilbert, Ariz.; brother, Jack Garvin of California; and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Dan, and sister, Joyce Oepping.

Funeral services are at 11 a.m., Wednesday, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport. Visitation is at 9:30 a.m. until service time, Wednesday, at the church. A private family burial will be at Oakdale Cemetery, Wilton. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island, is assisting the family.
