The West Liberty volleyball team made short work of the Northeast Rebels of Goose Lake in three sets, Sept. 12, at West Liberty.
"I thought we kept our intensity up, and the girls were having fun. It was our first home game, so I bet the kids were a little nervous, but our crowd is always excellent," West Liberty Head Coach Ruben Galvan said.
"I saw a lot of nice things today. We were transitioning well. We had a lot of free balls to work on, so that's always nice," he added. "Our passing was good, and once again, Cassedi (Simon) did an excellent job for our hitters. She gives them that extra second they need to get the ball."
West Liberty took the first set 25-15. The first three points of the set were on errors, two for Northeast and two for West Liberty. A kill by the Rebels tied the set at 2-2. Northeast took a one-point lead on a placement, then Kayla Kaalberg tied it at 3-3 with a kill.
A placement by Kaalberg, then a kill on the line by the Rebels, made it 4-4. Northeast gave West Liberty two points on errors, then two kills by the Rebels tied it again. A West Liberty error and a kill by Kaalberg made it a 7-7 tie. Hailey Daufeldt got a kill for the Comets, then a serving error made it 8-8 for the last tie of the set.
A long serve by the Rebels, a kill by Merideth Nichols, a Simon ace and a kill by Kyleigh Becker made it 12-8, Comets.
The Rebels hit the ball into the net, then Audra Bridenstine got a kill, and the Rebels called a time out. The score was 14-8.
Two kills by the Comets were followed by a kill by the Rebels and a West Liberty violation. Bridenstine got another kill for a 17-10 West Liberty lead. A Comets' net serve was followed by another Bridenstine kill.
Simon tipped the ball for a point. A Northeast kill and a Northeast net serve made it 20-12, Comets. The Rebels took a time out.
Kaalberg got a kill, then Northeast scored a point with a kill. A tap over by Daufeldt made it 22-13. The Comets gave the Rebels a point with a hit into the net; a kill on the line by Molly Kelly made it 23-14.
Northeast hit the ball out of bounds then got a kill. The set point came on a kill by Becker for a 25-15 Comets win.
The Comets outplayed the Rebels 25-11 in the second set. Northeast started the game with a serving error, then a hit into the net. A kill by Daufeldt made it 3-0. Northeast hit the ball out of bounds, then a violation by the Comets made it 4-1. West Liberty hit the ball out of bounds, then Nichols got a kill.
Northeast got a kill, followed by Kaalberg on the corner for a 6-3 West Liberty lead. Northeast scored on a tip, then Simon tipped the ball over the net on the second touch to score. Northeast hit the ball in the net then got a kill. With the score 9-4, the Rebels called a time out.
A Northeast carry and kill made it 14-6. Becker, Daufeldt and then Bridenstine each got a kill. The Rebels called another time out with the score at 17-6.
Northeast scored with a block, then Daufeldt got a kill. A kill by the Rebels was followed by a West Liberty net violation. Kaalberg got a tip for a 19-9 Comets lead. West Liberty scored the next four points on a placement by C. Simon, a Northeast miscommunication, a block by Daufeldt, and a kill by Daufeldt. A Northeast kill made it 23-10, then the Rebels served the ball into the net. Northeast got another kill, then Becker got a kill to finish the set and give the Comets a 2-0 lead.
West Liberty won the third set 15-17. Northeast got a kill, then Kaalberg got a kill. Erika Bonnavong served an ace, then Daufeldt scored for the Comets on a tip. A tip by Northeast made it 3-2, Comets. A Northeast serving error was followed by a Northeast kill, and a net violation by the Rebels made it 5-3, Comets.
Kaalberg served an ace, but the Comets didn't get the ball returned. A Northeast net serve was followed by a Simon ace. The teams traded errors to a 9-5 tally. The Rebels scored on a tip, then they had a long serve. A Northeast kill was followed by a kill by Bridenstine. Shannon McMichael got a block to put the Comets up 12-7, and the Rebels called a time out.
Northeast scored the next three points on a tip and two West Liberty errors. A net serve by the Rebels made it 13-10. Kaalberg and Daufeldt got a kill each, then the Comets had a serving error.
Kaalberg got another kill, Northeast hit the ball out of bounds, then Simon scored two points on a placement and a tap over. With a 19 to 11 score, the Rebels called another time out.
The Rebels traded kills with Kaalberg, then Simon scored on a tip. A Simon ace made it 22-13. A Northeast miscue, a Northeast kill, then a hit into the net by each team made it 24-15. Northeast got two more kills, then a tip by Daufeldt gave the Comets the set and the match.
