|8th grade football defeats Mid-Prairie|
On Sept. 24, the Comets hosted the Mid-Prairie Hawks, finding the win in unfamiliar territory.
West Liberty fumbled on the opening drive near the red zone and, shortly after, the Hawks opened up the scoring with a touchdown on the next series. Thus the Comets were down 0-6 at the half.
Mid-Prairie received the ball to start the third quarter and scored quickly on a touchdown reception. The Comets were down 0-13 after a Mid-Prairie extra kick.
After a long third quarter with the Comet defense stalling the Hawks on the goal line, the Comet offense came together with Bryce Esmoil finding the end zone. However, the Comets were still down 6-13 with 30 seconds left in the third.
After forcing a punt on the next series, the Comets needed to go nearly the distance of the field. Their next possession showcased runs from Esmoil, Joe Kelly, Michael Hartman and quarterback Tatum Koenig. Their blocking scheme came together and, on a fourth and one, Esmoil bulldozed his way across the goal line. The score became 12-13 Mid Prairie.
The Comets opted for two. In dramatic fashion, Esmoil converted on a short run to put West Liberty ahead by one.
On Mid-Prairie’s next series, linebacker Joe Kelly stripped the ball from the running back and took off the opposite direction for another Comet touchdown. Esmoil converted the extra two points ending the game at 22-13 for a Comets' win.
Blocking well for the Comets were Andy Lopez, Logan Crees, Jonari Lopez, Victor Gonzales, Nathan Schemmel, Justis Dengler, Juan Lozano, Cole Chown and Jose Medrano. Playing well on defense were Hunter Rock, JJ Van Dusen, Leo Domiguez, Elias Rocha, Jackson Gingerich, and Tyler Rock.
The Comets are coached by James Laughlin, Jeff Laughlin and Jerrod Collins and traveled to West Branch the following Tuesday, Oct. 1, to take on the Bears.
