|J.V. football starts cold, but gets hot|
Junior varsity football team had a rough start, but has made gains over the last couple of weeks.
They began their season by visiting Regina for a shortened half game due to the heat. The Comets held their own in the first quarter, but the Regals took over in the second quarter winning the game.
However, using the shortened game as a learning experience, the Comets hosted Mid-Prairie three days later. They competed well in the first half, but the Mid-Prairie offense exploded after wearing down the WL defense. The Comets lost 48-12.
The Comets used a week off of competition to regroup. Traveling to Louisa-Muscatine, Sept. 16, they found their first victory, 40-28.
Their offense was led by quarterback Cooper Koenig and running backs Joe Baker, Gaige Trvs and Chris McMichael. Zaid Acevedo handled punting and kicking duties while the defense was led by Jakob Barten, Noah Barten, Kurtis Minor, Armando Revelez and Ivan Escobedo.
The following week the Comets traveled to Columbus Junction. In the first quarter, the Comet offense moved the ball well, but couldn’t find the end zone after good runs by Chris McMichael. The Wildcats scored on short gains due to big Columbus running backs, making it 7-0 against WL.
After a long second quarter, Cooper Koenig returned a punt for a 70-yard touchdown right before halftime, with Acevedo kicking the extra point. The score was tied 7-7.
The third quarter was plagued by penalties for the Comets. Two Comet touchdowns were called back due to holding, while a misguided snap caused the Comet offense to stall out on a couple of possessions.
However, at the end of the third quarter, Cooper Koenig found the end zone on a short run. The Comets took the lead, 14-7. The Wildcat ground assault continued and eventually found an opening to score. They opted for two, which was converted giving the Wildcats the lead 15-14.
The Comet offense had time for one more offensive series; however, penalties still thwarted the effort. At third and thirty-five, Cooper Koenig passed to Joe Baker who scrambled for a Comet first down with 2:26 left.
The Comets used that momentum to pound the Wildcat defense with ground counter attacks. With 1:56 remaining, Joe Baker found the end zone to give the Comets the lead. Acevedo converted the kick. With one more last effort from the Wildcats, the Comet defense sealed the victory with good corner defense and line pressure.
Noah Barten sacked the quarterback to finish off the Wildcat offense, resulting in a final score of 21-15.
The Comets continued their win streak against Central Lee on Monday, Sept. 30, bringing their record to 3-1.
The Comets got touchdown scores from Josh Walshire, Chris McMichael, Noah Feldman, and two from running back Joe Baker.
They will host Mediapolis on Monday, Oct. 7 with the game time starting at 6:30 pm. All are invited to attend.
