Advertisement Athletic boosters remain active

While West Liberty sports are in full gear, so too are the organizations that support them. The West Liberty Booster Club is one such group, working behind the scenes to help the youth.

For the volunteer group, it's less about raising money and more about creating a good atmosphere around students, grades 7-12, in the athletics program.

"Our mission is to promote athletic excellence, good sportsmanship and character building relationships among athletes, coaches and parents," said the organization.

Besides running the concession stand at home football games, the Booster Club has been involved with bringing the safe room to the high school, selling Comets' apparel and concrete school spirit stamps, providing athletic equipment and organizing community spirit window painting.

They also help to provide proper training for coaches and athletes, which minimizes injuries on the field, as well as get involved with homecoming activities.

It gets to be a busy schedule for the group. Right now it has 12 members, but it's always looking for more help.

"More and more are joining us in our mission as they learn what we do and what we are about," added the Boosters. "We all stay extremely busy pitching in to do whatever is needed for our coaches and athletes."

They remain active year round. School athletics are a never ending business, whether it be football and volleyball in the fall, basketball and soccer in the spring, or baseball and softball in the summer.

Accordingly, the opportunity to help is always there. There's a public Booster meeting the first Wednesday of every month at 6 p.m. in the media center at the high school, but there's still ways to help for those who don't attend.

"There are many ways to be involved, concession stand workers, ordering supplies for concessions, helping with apparel, fundraising, membership drives and more," said the Boosters.

According to the group, the biggest perk for participating is the gratification of giving back to the West Liberty community. All Comet teams benefit from its work.

The Boosters are greatly indebted to their sponsors, and to members who play active roles in the club in helping to keep everything organized.
