The West Liberty volleyball team won their River Valley Conference tournament match, besting the Cascade Cougars 3-0 and claiming third place in the conference.
Scores were 25-15, 25-15, 25-16. Despite the solid wins, the Comets did not play as well as they could have.
"I think they are always excited to play, but I don't think the intensity was there," West Liberty Head Coach Ruben Galvan said. "We need to get that fixed before district starts."
In set one, Molly Kelly started with an ace for the Comets. A net violation on West Liberty tied it at 1-1. The Cougars scored the next three points, then the Comets made a run, scoring four straight on a Cougar error and three kills by Hailey Daufeldt. Cascade scored with a placement to tie it at 5-5, then West Liberty scored the next six points. A kill by Kayla Kaalberg made it 12-6, then Cassedi Simon scored with a tap over. A West Liberty block made it 13-7.
The Cougars scored a point, then Cascade hit the ball out of bounds. A net violation and another hit out of bounds made it 16-8, West Liberty. Daufeldt got another kill, then the Comets had a net violation. A West Liberty carrying call and a block that went out of bounds made it 18-10. Daufeldt got another kill, then the teams traded points to a 21-13 tally. Two Cascade violations and a kill by the Cougars made it 24-14. The Comets were called for a double hit, then the final point of the set came on a kill by Kaalberg for a 25-15 final.
Kelly started the second set off with an ace, the next serve wasn't returned, then Kelly served another ace for a 3-0 West Liberty lead. Daufeldt got a block, then Cascade scored with a kill. Daufeldt got a kill, then the Cougars scored the next four to tie it up at 5-5. Cascade took the lead on a placement, then got an ace. C. Simon scored a point for the Comets, then an ace by Daufeldt tied it at 7-7. The Comets hit the ball out of bounds, then Kaalberg had a kill for an 8-8 tie.
The Comets took the lead back on a hit out of bounds by the Cougars, then a kill by Kyleigh Becker made it 10-8, Comets. A West Liberty error and a block by C. Simon made it 11-9. A four-hits call on the Cougars was followed by a block that went out of bounds. West liberty had a net violation and an error for a 13-11 score. West Liberty scored the next four points on three errors by Cascade and an ace by Maddie Simon. The Cougars took a time out.
When play resumed, the teams traded points to a 21-14 score. Kaalberg got a kill, the Cougars had a net violation, then a block by C. Simon made it 24-14. Cascade scored a point on a kill, then a kill by C. Simon finished the set at 25-15, and the Comets had a 2-0 lead.
"One of the things we were having trouble with tonight was our serve receive," Cascade Head Coach Melanie Munson said. "Because our serve receive...we did not execute a successful offense like we wanted to."
Cascade started the third set scoring with a hit out of bounds. A block by Daufeldt and a kill by Merideth Nichols made it 3-0, Comets. Cascade scored two points on a block and a kill, then West liberty scored a point. Two West Liberty net violations made it 4-4. Kills by Daufeldt, Kaalberg and C. Simon gave the Comets a 7-4 lead. A West Liberty error, a kill by Cascade and a double-hit call on the Comets tied the set at 7-7. The Comets hit the ball out of bounds, then the Cougars had a net violation for an 8-8 score. Two Cascade errors and two West Liberty kills made it 12-8, Comets. The Cougars took a time out.
Cascade got a kill, then West Liberty got a kill. The Cougars hit the ball out of bounds, then scored a point. A placement by the Cougars made it 14-11. Audra Bridenstine got a kill for the Comets, then a West Liberty block made it 16-11. The Cougars scored a point, then a kill by Daufeldt, an error by Cascade, and a hit into the net by the Comets made it 18-13. Cascade scored a point, then West Liberty got two kills. A hit into the net by the Comets made it 20-15. Kaalberg got a kill, Daufeldt served an ace, and with the score 22-15, Cascade called a time out.
Becker got a kill, then the Cougars hit the ball into the net for a 24-15 score. The Comets hit the ball out of bounds, then a hit into the net by Cascade ended the set at 25-16 and the match at 3-0.
"We've got to learn to set the tone of the game," Galvan said. "It seems like we play (to the level of) whatever competition (we have). If you saw us play over the weekend, playing the top-ranked teams in the state, we were playing with them. Tonight it was disappointing to see them like that."
