8th grade girls beat Tipton, lose to Regina

The 8th grade girls' basketball team beat Tipton, but fell to Regina in its season closer.

The A-team was away against Tipton. In the first half, the Comets started with a 10-0 run and finished the half with a 23-6 lead. In the second half, the Comets took control on both sides of the ball taking the win 42-17, going on to 10-1 on the season.

Tatum Koenig led the team with 25 points (12 steals, 2 rebounds) while teammates contributed with the following; Sarah Seele 8 points (7 steals, 1 reb); Brianna Morales 7 points (1 steals, 7 rebs); Sihisla Puentes 2 points (6 steals); Mariela Filerio (2 rebs, 1 steal) and Zoey Boehme (4 steals, 3 rebs).

The B-team, having to play against several Tipton starters, had yet to beat Tipton. However, in a game played only for one half they played great defense and scored points in transition for the win, 21-15. They went on to 8-3 for the season.

Josie Jimenez led the team with 13 points (7 steals, 2 rebs); Emma Martin 4 points (2 steals, 1 rebs); Nikita Biesler (1 reb); Mariela Filerio 3 points (2 steals, 7 rebs); Brookelyn Harned (1 steal, 1 reb) and Emily Vance (1 reb).

The final game of the season was against undefeated Regina. The A-team lost by one in overtime.

In the first half, the Comets struggled from the field while Regina had several three point baskets and second-chance opportunities, taking a 28-13 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Comets went on an 8-0 run with the press, but they struggled defensively afterward, leading to a Regina victory 51-35. The A-team ended the season 10-2.

Tatum Koenig led the team with 20 points (4 steals, 3 rebs) while teammates contributed with the following; Brianna Morales, 6 points (8 steals, 9 rebs); Zoey Boehme, 2 points (1 steal, 5 rebs); Sihisla Puentes (1 steal, 4 rebs); Sarah Seele (1 steal, 1 reb); Mariela Filerio (1 reb).

The B-team lost to several starters from the A-team. The Comets struggled offensively, ending with a 25-9 Regina victory. The team finished the season 8-4.

Emma Martin led the team with 4 points (2 steals); Brookelyn Harned, 2 points; Nikita Biesler, 2 points; Emily Vance, 1 point; Josie Jimenez (2 steals); Mariela Filerio (1 steal, 5 rebs); Lauren Aird (1 reb).

“This was a great season for Comet basketball," said Coach Morris. "The girls had high expectations for themselves and they played competitively the entire year. I am proud of their hard work and willingness to get better every day. I would also like to thank assistant coaches Nikki Koenig and Aide Morales for all of their help this year. There was tremendous support throughout the season….proud to be a Comet!”
