Tigers take Comet girls down

The West Liberty girls' basketball team traveled to Tipton Jan. 9 and lost 40-23 to the Tigers.

"We played well for eight to 12 minutes," West Liberty Head Coach Nick Heat said. "We need to put a full game together. We're having trouble putting the ball in the basket. You're not going to win many games when you shoot 20 percent from the field. We need to get more physical on the defensive end and aggressive on the offensive end of the court."

First Quarter

Both teams got off to a slow start. Cassedi Simon tipped off for the Comets, and it went to Kayla Kaalberg. Tipton got a defensive rebound, then C. Simon got a defensive board. The Comets traveled. Kaalberg got a defensive rebound, then Tipton got a steal and was fouled on a shot. Both free throws were made for a 2-0 Tipton lead with about 6:30 left in the quarter.

The next score was by Haddie Anderson for the Comets. She got a steal on an inbounds pass then made a three-point shot for a 3-2 West Liberty lead with 3:15 on the clock.

Tipton scored on a jump shot, then the Tigers got a defensive rebound. Hailey Daufeldt got a defensive board, then the Comets turned the ball over on a fast break. Audra Bridenstine got a rebound, then Tipton got a rebound. The Tigers turned the ball over with a minute to go in the quarter. The Tigers fouled, then the Comets turned the ball over. Tipton scored from the outside. West Liberty's try for a basket at the buzzer was no good and the Tigers led 6-3 after the first quarter.

Second Quarter

In the second quarter, the Tigers hit their stride, but the Comets did not. Tipton started with possession and made a jump shot for a 9-3 lead. They scored two more baskets, then Anderson got a steal and Emma Baker scored in the paint for the Comets. The score was 13-5.

Tipton scored, then the Comets turned the ball over, then took a time-out. When play resumed, C. Simon got a steal and passed the ball to Maddie Simon. The Tigers got a steal. A jump ball went to West Liberty.

Kyleigh Becker got an offensive rebound, then the Tigers got a defensive board. Tipton was fouled on a shot and made the first of two free throws. C. Simon got the rebound. Tipton was fouled and missed both free throws.

Anderson made a three-point shot with 2:23 on the clock for a 15-8 score. Audra Bridenstine got a defensive rebound, but Tipton got a steal and a layup. The Tigers scored two more times before halftime for a 21-8 score.

"We got off to a slow start, but once we got going, we started getting the ball reversed and got some of those 15-foot shots we work on in practice," Tipton Head Coach Chad Rezac said.

Third Quarter

The Tigers scored the first three baskets of the third quarter on a putback, an inside bucket and a short jumper for a 27-8 score with 5:23 on the clock. Bridenstine made a three-pointer for the Comets for a 27-11 score. Tipton scored on a baseline jumper. C. Simon got a block, and Bridenstine made a two-point outside shot for a 29-13 score.

Daufeldt got a steal and Anderson a layup for a 29-25 score, Tipton was fouled on a shot and made the second of two free throws. The Comets' shot at the buzzer was no good, and Tipton had a 30-15 lead going into the final quarter.

Fourth Quarter

The Tigers scored first in the fourth quarter on two free throws. The Comets turned the ball over, but Daufeldt got a defensive rebound. After an offensive rebound by Becker, Anderson scored on a mid-range jumper.

Tipton got a putback basket. The Tigers were fouled on a shot and made the first of two free throws. C. Simon got the rebound. Tipton got a defensive rebound and got fouled again. They made the first of two free throws again and C. Simon got the board.

Tipton got a defensive rebound and another basket, then C. Simon scored for the Comets for a 38-19 tally. Anderson got a steal, but the Comets traveled. Daufeldt got a steal and scored in the paint with 2:07 to go. Daufeldt got another steal but lost it out of bounds. Daufeldt got a defensive rebound, then the Tigers got a defensive board and scored in the paint with under 30 seconds to go. C. Simon made the last basket of the game for a 40-23 final score.
