Girls grab a second win

The West Liberty girls' basketball team got a win at home against the Falcons of Louisa-Muscatine Jan. 30. The Comets won 43-29.

"It was two teams battling," West Liberty Head Coach Nick Heath said, "In the first half, I thought we were a little flat. We only had one win, and L-M had no wins. I knew they were going to come in and fight for 32 minutes. They wanted that win. They played hard tonight."

First Quarter

The opening tip went to the Falcons, but they traveled. Cassedi Simon got an offensive board for the Comets, but West Liberty traveled.

Audra Bridenstine got a defensive board, and Hailey Daufeldt got a putback basket for the first score of the game. Each team traveled, then L-M made a three-point basket for a 3-2 score.

West Liberty traveled, L-M double dribbled, then L-M got a steal. Kayla Kaalberg got a deflection that went to Bridenstine. Daufledt scored, assist Kaalberg, and the Comets led 4-3.

Louisa-Muscatine scored, then Bridenstine scored. With 3:06 on the clock, the Falcons scored in the paint. West Liberty traveled, then Molly Kelly got a steal for the Comets. Bridenstine made a three-point shot for a 9-7 Comets lead with 2:17 left in the quarter.

Each team had a turnover, then Haddie Anderson got a steal and a layup for an 11-7 West Liberty lead. L-M scored the final basket of the quarter for an 11-9 score going into the second quarter.

Second Quarter

West Liberty had possession, but traveled at the beginning of the second quarter. The Falcons were fouled on a shot and made the first of two free throws. Daufledt got the rebound and Kelly made a three-point shot.

Kelly got a steal, each team got a defensive board, then Anderson got an offensive rebound. Anderson scored, assist Kelly, for a 16-10 score.

Both teams struggled to hold on to the ball or make a basket for a couple of minutes. Maddie Simon got a steal for the Comets. A Falcons' defensive rebound and three-point shot made it 16-13, Comets, with 4:00 left in the half.

Kelly was fouled on a shot and made the second of two free throws. Daufledt got a defensive rebound and C. Simon scored, assist Kelly. Bridenstine got a steal, but the Comets traveled. The Falcons scored, then C. Simon scored, assist Bridenstine, and the Comets led 21-15.

Louisa-Muscatine scored two more times in the half for a 21-19 score. The Falcons missed a shot at the buzzer and a chance for a halftime tie.

"The second half, we got after them better defensively and held them to 10 points in the second half," Heath said. "That was a big key. Our defense led to offense for us."

Third Quarter

The first score of the second half didn't come until the 6:30 mark when C. Simon scored, assist Bridenstine. The Falcons got an offensive rebound and a basket. Then Daufeldt scored, assist Anderson. Bridenstine got a steal and a layup and the Comets had a 27-21 lead.

The Falcons fouled the Comets, then Anderson made a basket and drew the foul. She completed the three-point play for a 30-21 West Liberty led with 4:57 left in the third quarter. Anderson got a defensive rebound and Kelly scored inside. Trailing 32-21, L-M took a time out.

C. Simon got a defensive rebound, and Anderson drove to the hoop and drew the foul. She made the first of two free throws, and the Falcons got the rebound. L-M scored with a long two-pointer. Kaalberg scored on a long two-pointer at the 1:08 mark for a 35-23 West Liberty lead.

The Falcons made a three-pointer at the buzzer for a 35-26 score going into the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter

"They hit the three at the end of the quarter," Heath said. "That could have led to a momentum (shift) or not, but our defense didn't let up." The Comets held the Falcons to just three points in the fourth quarter.

The final quarter started with several missed shots by both teams. The Comets finally scored at the 5:34 mark on a basket by Bridenstine, assist Anderson, for a 37-26 score.

The next basket was the Falcons' at the 4:02 mark. West Liberty was fouled and the Comets missed the front end of the one-and-one. L-M got the rebound. The next score was at the 2:42 mark when the Falcons got fouled. They made the first of two free throws. C. Simon got the rebound. Anderson was fouled with under a minute on the clock. She made the first of two free throws, and L-M got the rebound.

C. Simon got a defensive board, and Kelly was fouled on a shot. She made both free throws for a score of 40-29 with 34.1 seconds to go. Kelly was fouled again. She made the first but missed the second. C. Simon got the board and a basket for a final score of 42-29.

"It was a good win for us and I was proud of the girls," Heath said.

The Falcons, still looking for their first win of the season, have a first-year coach. "The girls really fought all the way through," Louisa-Muscatine Head Coach Scott Morel said. "They just don't give up. They continue to work hard. We just came out a little flat, and I didn't prepare them to be as intense as we needed to be."
