WL takes fourth at tourney

West Liberty finished fourth in the first ever River Valley Conference Wrestling Tournament held Feb. 1 at Wilton High School.

“We finished fourth in a 13-team tournament just six points out of second. I thought our kids wrestled hard,” said wrestling coach Jeff Weile.

Champions for West Liberty were Elliot Henderson in the 120 pound class and Dylan Van Dusen at 285 pounds. This was a first for both wrestlers.

Henderson beat Hoffmann (Cascade), Green (North Cedar), and won 3-2 in Overtime in the Finals against Eric Everson (Camanche). Dylan Van Dusen was crowned champion by defeating Rocha (West Branch), Giese (Wilton), and defeated Pike (Monticello) 6-2 in the finals.

Individual Results:

At 126 pounds Kohl Wheeler placed third by beating Clark (Tipton), being defeated by Carew (West Branch), then coming back and beating Shaffer (Cascade) and Everson (Camanche) 8-0 in his last match.

At 132 pounds, Dakota Herrold lost to O’Neil (WB) 3-2, and then beat McAtee (Tipton) and Wagner (Bellevue) in the fifth place match.

At 138 pounds, Jakob Barten was defeated by Tatman (WB), then beat Poduska (NC), Beckley (Bellevue) and received a forfeit in the fifth place match.

145 pound Tanner Mueller was defeated by Beaver (Regina), beat Gritton (Tipton), and then was defeated by Peterschmidt (MP) in the fifth place match.

160 pound Trevor Schneider was defeated by Sanchez (MP), beat Michels (Bellevue), Ihrig (Tipton) and then beat Humphreys (Durant) for fifth place.

195 pound Sam Weaver placed fifth for the Comets, while 220 pound Mason Tvrs beat Turman (NE), was defeated by Duwa (MP), beat Stillmunkes (Bellevue) and lost to Olsen (Durant) in the fifth place match.

West Liberty travels to Assumption Davenport on Feb. 8 for sectionals at Noon, then on to Dewott Central on Feb. 15 for district play at noon should any of the wrestlers qualify.
