WL boys beat Tipton Tigers

The West Liberty Comets boys' basketball team put it all together in their Feb. 6 game against Tipton and beat the Tigers 80-60 at West Liberty.

"One of the few times this year we've played four quarters. I'm very proud of them," West Liberty Head Coach James Laughlin said. "I thought they did a nice job executing at the offensive end and getting stops on the defensive end.

"When we put it all together, we can put points like that on the board and win ball games."

First Quarter

Carl Guardado's tip to start the game went to Kyle Miller, who scored a quick layup. Miller got a defensive rebound, then Guardado scored, assist Brett Becker, for a 4-0 West Liberty lead. That was Becker's first of 18 assists for the game. Becker is now second in assists for all classes in Iowa with 153. He leads the River Valley Conference and Class 2A in assists as well.

Tipton scored at the 7:07 mark, then the Comets fouled the Tigers after a Tiger steal. Tipton made the second of two free throws. The Comets turned the ball over, Tipton made a three-point shot, and Tipton led 6-4 with 6:38 on the clock.

Becker dished the ball to Guardado who scored to tie the game at 6-6. Guardado got a defensive rebound, but the Comets turned the ball over. Guardado got another defensive board, and Miller scored, assist Becker. Tipton tied it at 8-8.

Troy Heick scored, assist Becker, for a 10-8 West Liberty lead with 5:00 left in the quarter. Tipton fouled, then Guardado scored, assist Becker. Tipton drove to the basket and scored. The Comets turned the ball over, then the Tigers made a three-pointer for a 13-12 Tipton lead.

Heick scored again, assist Becker, then Tipton was fouled and made both free throws. Guardado drove to the basket and scored, then Tipton scored inside. Tipton traveled, and Guardado scored again for an 18-17 West Liberty lead.

Miller got a defensive rebound, then Tipton stole the ball and scored. The Comets turned the ball over, and Tipton got a putback basket for a 21-18 lead with 30 seconds left in the first quarter.

Brady Smith was fouled on a shot for West Liberty. He made both free throws. The Tigers' shot at the buzzer missed. West Liberty trailed 21-20 going into the second quarter.

Second Quarter

Tipton had possession to start the second quarter and scored a quick basket. Tipton got a defensive rebound, then the Tigers turned the ball over, and Becker came up with it. Cooper Koenig made a layup for a 23-22 score, West Liberty trailing.

Tipton made a three-point basket, then Ryan Alpen made a trey for the Comets. Tipton was fouled on a shot and made both free throws. Heick made a putback basket. Tipton was fouled again and missed both free throws. Smith got the rebound.

Smith got an offensive rebound and scored. He drew a foul and made the extra point for a 30-28 West Liberty lead with 4:55 left in the first half. Becker got a steal and a layup. Tipton traveled then got a defensive rebound. The Tigers were fouled and made two free throws.

Guardado scored, assist Becker; then Becker got a defensive rebound. Miller drove to the basket and scored for a 36-30 West Liberty lead with 2:40 on the clock. Tipton was fouled and made both free throws.

West Liberty turned the ball over; then Koenig got a defensive rebound. Koenig scored on a fadeaway jumper, then Tipton was fouled. The Tigers made the first free throw, and a West Liberty lane violation gave Tipton the second as well.

Miller was fouled on a shot. He made the second of two free throws. Guardado got a steal. Miller scored, assist Smith. With less than three seconds on the clock, the Tigers made a three-point shot. West Liberty took a 41-37 lead into the locker room.

Third Quarter

West Liberty held Tipton to seven points in the third quarter. West Liberty had the ball to start the quarter, but Tipton got a defensive rebound. Guardado got a steal and a layup. Tipton made a three-point shot.

West liberty scored the next six points on a drive by Guardado, a layup by Miller and two free throws shot by Miller, when the Tipton bench was called for a technical foul. The score was 49-40, Comets, with 4:46 left in the third quarter.

The Comets kept possession because of the technical foul, but Tipton got a defensive rebound. Guardado got a defensive rebound, and the Tigers got a steal. Tipton was fouled on a shot and made the second of two free throws. Koenig made a three-point shot, and the Comets led 52-41.

Guardado got a defensive rebound then drove the baseline and scored. Each team turned the ball over; then Tipton got an offensive rebound and basket. Smith was fouled on a shot. He made the first free throw, missed the second, and Tipton got the rebound. Tipton turned the ball over, then Koenig scored, assist Becker.

Smith got a defensive rebound, and Koenig scored, assist Smith, for a 59-43 score. Tipton got an offensive rebound, then was fouled on a putback try. The Tigers made the first of two free throws. Miller got the rebound, and the Comets led 59-44 after the third quarter.

Fourth Quarter

West Liberty did not let up in the fourth quarter despite its lead. Tipton had the ball to start and got fouled. The first free throw was missed, the second made. Heick scored, assist Becker. Tipton was fouled on a shot and made both free throws. Heick got a block, then Guardado scored, assist Becker. Guardado was fouled and made the free throw for a 64-47 lead with 6:42 on the clock.

Tipton turned the ball over on an errant pass, and Miller scored, was fouled and completed the three-point play, stretching the West Liberty lead to 20 points.

Becker got a steal and a layup. He was fouled and also completed the three-point play for a 70-47 score. Tipton drew a foul and made the second of two free throws. Miller drove to the hoop and scored. Guardado got a steal, but the Comets turned the ball over.

Tipton drew a foul, Riley Anderson's fifth foul of the game. The Tigers made both free throws for a 72-50 score with 5:17 to go. Heick scored, assist Becker. Smith got a defensive rebound and was fouled. He made both free throws for a 76-50 score.

Tipton turned the ball over, and Koenig made a putback basket. The Tigers turned the ball over, and Koenig made a jumper from the free throw line for a 30-point West Liberty lead.

With the West Liberty starters on the bench and the bench players getting playing time, Tipton scored the final 10 points of the contest for an 80-60 final.

"We let it get out of hand early in the third quarter and late in the third quarter," Tipton Head Coach Matt Fouch said. "It seems like the games we bring our offense and we score 60 points, we give up 80."
