Girls suffer final loss

The West Liberty girls' basketball team bowed out of post-season play early with a first-round regional loss to Camanche at Camanche Feb. 15. The final score was 56-20.

"The first quarter, I thought all right, we're hanging around," West Liberty Head Coach Nick Heath said. "Then we couldn't score. They outsize us probably in every position, and they're a good team."

First Half

In the first quarter, West Liberty scored six points to the Indians' 10 points. The Comets' points were from three baskets, one each by Cassedi Simon, Kayla Kaalberg and Molly Kelly.

The second quarter saw just one basket by the Comets. West Liberty started with the ball but turned it over. Audra Bridenstine showed some tough defense and forced a turnover by the Indians, but the Comets traveled. Camanche scored the next seven points on a basket, a three-point basket and a bucket in the paint.

After a West Liberty time out at the 3:30 mark, Camanche traveled, and Hailey Daufeldt scored, assist Kelly, for a 17-8 score. The Indians scored 13 more points before the halftime buzzer, taking a 30-8 lead into the locker room.

"It was tough to match up with our bigs, and they had a hard time getting the ball to the middle," Camanche Head Coach Danny Vogel said.

Second Half

In the third quarter, the Comets again made just one basket. Anderson got an offensive rebound, and Bridenstine got a steal, but the Indians scored the first 14 points in the half. The continuous clock rule was in effect from the 2:05 mark on. Emma Baker made a three-point basket for the Comets for a 44-11 score. Camanche scored one more time in the quarter for a 46-11 tally after three quarters.

The fourth quarter went quickly with the clock running continuously, but the Comets had their best scoring quarter with nine points. Camanche had possession to start the quarter and made a quick basket. Elizabeth Muncy drove to the hoop and drew a foul. She made the second of two free throws for a 48-12 score.

Camanche scored in the paint; then the Indians got a steal. Camanche turned the ball over with a carry.

Haddie Anderson got an offensive rebound, got a putback basket and was fouled on the shot. She made the free throw for a 50-15 score with 6:32 left in the game. Maddie Simon got a defensive rebound,

Camanche got a defensive rebound, then Muncy got a defensive rebound. The Comets turned the ball over, then the Indians were fouled and made the second of two free throws. After a West Liberty foul, Camanche made a three-point basket.

Each team turned the ball over, then Anderson made a basket. M. Simon deflected the ball and the Comets came up with it. Camanche had a defensive rebound, then Kyleigh Becker grabbed a defensive board. A jump ball went to Camanche, then Baker got a steal. M. Simon was fouled and made both free throws for a 54-19 score with 2:16 on the clock.

The Indians turned the ball over then got a block. Katie Meyers got a defensive rebound, then a jump ball went to the Comets. Camanche got a defensive rebound, then Muncy got a steal. She drove to the basket and drew a foul. She made the second free throw for a 54-20 score. Camanche scored one more time for a final of 56-20.

This was the final game for two West Liberty seniors, Katie Meyers and Elizabeth Muncy. "We return a lot of players this year. We've got to get a commitment this summer to come in and work."
