Hazle Schmidt died Thursday evening, April 17, 2014, following a long and challenging struggle with COPD.

Her story began on January 25, 1925 in West Liberty. Her parents Leslie and Bertha Steen had two children, Hazle and her younger brother Charles. She married Roger Schmidt on the very day she graduated from college in 1947. They had two children, Steven Schmidt and Marsha Skaggs. She worked for many years as an executive secretary for the district office of Safeway Grocery Stores.

Hazle will be remembered as a loving and devoted mother, friend and advocate who was quite a force of nature, having been nicknamed “Sarge” early on and it stuck—for a reason! She loved animals and passionately believed in supporting animal welfare and rescue groups. She sorely missed her “auburn” Golden Retriever, Sammy, who preceded her in death.

Having many hobbies and interests, she enjoyed sewing both clothing and crafts, and would knit dozens upon dozens of slippers for friends and family as well as an abused women’s shelter. She loved music and played the organ beautifully.

She is survived by Marsha and Doug Skaggs; Steve and Anne Schmidt; grandchildren, Christian, Michael and Eric Schmidt; brother Charles Steen; nieces, nephews and many other loving family and friends.

A private family service will take place at a later time. Memorial contributions may be made to: C.A.R.E. (Castaway Animal Rescue Effort) at 1328-A W. Sunshine St, Springfield, MO 65807.
