Fire Dept. is halfway there!

Wednesday, April 30, 2014
Dear West Liberty Community,

The West Liberty Volunteer Fire and Emergency Medical Service would like to thank the community for its support of the department and donations to the new “EMS” facilities.

To date we have collected approximately half of the projected $300,000 that we need to complete our building project!

Donations can be sent to the WLFD, C/O Kirt Sickels, 729 West Prairie Street, West Liberty, Iowa 52776. Our EMS building drawing can be seen at the fire station and a special thanks goes out to our local backs here in town for displaying the drawings as well.

2013 was a very busy year for the West Liberty Fire and EMS Department, in fact it was a record year and we would like to share some facts with you.

For the calendar year of 2013 the WLFD had 101 fire calls, 11 mutual aide calls given to surrounding departments, 5 Hazmat incidents, 32 traffic accidents and 2 search and rescue events. The total amount of personnel responding to these events was 588 or an average of 6 members responding per call.

On the EMS side of the house we had 537 ambulance calls for the same time, January 1 through December 31. We transported 311 patients to area ER’s and Medical Centers and used University of Iowa Air Care once. 122 of the calls we responded to refused treatment or went to the facilities by private vehicle. On each ambulance call the department averaged 3 personnel responding for a total of 1611 for the year.

Keeping all this in mind the West Liberty Fire Department depends on its “volunteers” to provide the community with a safe and responsive environment. As such we are always looking for volunteers to help us keep the community and its surrounding areas safe and covered for fire and medical emergencies. The department would like to reach out to the community, to anyone 18 years of age and older, to see if anyone would like to join us and be an active partner/member of the department and the community!

On May 12 at 7 p.m. we are having an “open house informational session” with all those who may be interested in becoming an active member of the department. Please be prompt so that information can be shared and everyone can hear all the questions that may be asked. If you are interested and cannot make the meeting please call Kirt Sickels at 319-627-6442.

Again we would like to thank the community for their support and thank the area businesses for their support as well!
