Girls’ track perseveres

The Comets girls' track and field team still isn't scoring the points it would like to, but it continues to persevere.

"It seems like every time we have a chance to take a step forward as a team, we have to settle for a step back due to illness and injury," West Liberty Head Coach Dennis Riley said. "The girls finished sixth out of seven teams at Durant (April 22), but there were some good performances."

Kayla Kaalberg had West Liberty's only first place finish. In the 100m dash, Kaalberg finished in 14.17 for the win. Alyssa Schemmel finished in 15.75, and Adi Simpson finished in 16.34.

In the field events, Morgan Nichols turned in a second place finish in the discus with a throw of 91-11. Schemmel was fourth and Nichols fifth in the shot put. Schemmel put the shot 28-01, and Nichols put the shot 27-05. In the high jump, Tamra Wisman had a jump of 4-02.

In the distance races, Becca Heckman ran the 800m run in 2:39.23 for second place. Giselle Coreas was fifth in the 300m run, finishing in 14:10.55. Coreas finished the 1500m run in 6:27.99.

Simpson ran the 400m dash in 1:17.82. She finished the 200m dash in 34.81, and Maddie Simon finished the 200m dash in 32.30.

Audra Bridenstine placed fifth in the 400m hurdles, finishing in 1:17.63. In the 100m hurdles, Cassedi Simon was third and Bridenstine fifth with times of 18.16 and 18.72, respectively.

The shuttle hurdle team of Nichols (21.39), Bridenstine (18.54), Wisman (20.48) and C. Simon (19.20) finished third with a time of 1:19.75

In the distance medley relay race, C. Simon (31.38), Becca Heckman (32.97), Jaida Dalton (1:15.28) and Jessica Crook (2:50.82) placed fourth in 5:10.16.

The Comets placed fourth in the 4x100 in 59.14. Team members were Wisman (15.03), Bridenstine (13.79), Becca Heckman (15.56) and M. Simon (14.60).

Also in fourth place was the 4x400 team of Dalton (1:17.43), Belinda Heckman (1:11.00, Crook (1:10.56) and C. Simon (1:12.42). Their combined time was 4:51.68.

The sprint medley team of M. Simon (14.72), Dalton (15.06), Belinda Heckman (28.80) and Schemmel (1:15.60) finished in fifth place with a combined time of 2:14.64.

The 4x200 team of Belinda Heckman, Schemmel, Elizabeth Muncy and Crook finished in 2:08.11 for sixth place. Accurate individual times for this event are not available.

The Comets next compete at their own West Liberty Coed meet May 2. Field events begin at 4:45, and running events begin at 5:15.
