WL boys’ track battles injuries

Injuries continue to plague the West Liberty boys’ track and field team, and it's costing them dearly.

"Cooper Koenig sprained his ankle playing AAU basketball last weekend," West Liberty Head Coach Gus Garcia said. "He will be down for maybe two to three weeks. Hopefully, we'll get him back for districts."

Koenig is a force in the sprints and was anchor of the 4x100 Drake-qualifying relay team. As if losing Koenig wasn't enough, Troy Heick, the third-leg runner of the 4x100, went down with a hamstring injury at the Mid-Prairie meet April 22. "We're just fighting injuries all this year," Garcia said.

With the second half of the 4x100 team unable to run at Drake, the Comets gave a couple of less experienced runners a chance to run on the famous blue oval at Drake, Armando Revelez replaced Koenig, and Evan Dalton took Heick's place. The team was ultimately disqualified because of a hand-off problem that was a result of lack of experience and nerves.

"But I was happy because our first two runners, Robert Lopez and Riley Anderson, ran tremendous times," Garcia said. "Robert almost broke 11 coming out of the blocks which is super, and Riley had a 10.68, which is great."

In addition to Drake last week, the team ran at Mid-Prairie April 22 and at their home Ron Maxson Relays April 25.

At Mid-Prairie, the Comets scored 27 points.

In the field events, Noah Feldman had a third place finish in the high jump, jumping 5-10 for six points. Dylan VanDusen scored one point with a sixth-place finish in the discus. He had a throw of 114-05. VanDusen put the shot 34-10.25 in the shot put event.

Lopez placed second in the 100m dash, finishing in 11.26 and scoring eight points. Revelez finished the race in 12.65.

In the 200m dash, Revelez finished in 26.53, and Sam Weaver finished in 28.75.

Ryan Garvin and Noah Barten ran the 400m dash with times of 1:04.63 and 1:12.63, respectively.

The 4x200 team of Lopez, Anderson, Heick, and Dalton finished third in their event, scoring six points with a 1:35.18 time. The same team ran the 4x100, finishing in 46.46 for fifth place, earning two points.

In the distance medley relay race, Ivan Escobedo, Jakob Barten, Chris McMichael and Kane Newsom finished in 4:56.39.

In the 4x400, N. Feldman, Escobedo, J. Barten and Austin Goddard finished in fifth place with a time of 3:50.71, earning two points for the Comets.

The shuttle hurdle relay team of Josh Walshire, Revelez, McMichael and Parker Feldman took fifth place, scoring two points. Their time was 1:10.75.

P. Feldman and Walshire ran the 110m hurdles. P. Feldman finished in 18.52, and Walshire finished in 19.25.

In the 400m hurdles, P. Feldman finished with a time of 1:07.28.

Marco Tena and Tyree Keys competed in the 1600m run, but no times for them were recorded. Gaige Tvers and Ashton Peach ran in the 800m run. No times were recorded for the Comets in that race.

Mid-Prairie team scores: 1) Williamsburg, 126; 2) Mt. Pleasant, 117; 3) Mid-Prairie, 75; 4) Washington, 49; 5) Grinnell, 43; 6) Eddyville-Blakesburg, 39; 7) Columbus, 36; 8) Wilton, 25; 9) West Liberty, 27; 10) Midland, 11.

In the Ron Maxson Relays, points were even harder to come by.

N. Feldman was third in the high jump, scoring six of the team's eight meet points. He had a jump of 5-10.

The team's other two points were in the 4x800. Goddard, Juan Sosa, Peach and Keys teamed up for a seventh place finish in 9:57.30.

In the dashes, McMichael finished the 100m dash in 12.65, N. Feldman in 12.92 and Garvin in 13.44. In the 200m dash, Weaver had a time of 28.66, Newsom's was 30.28 and Dylan Clifford's was 32.43. Peach finished the 400m dash in 1:02.47, J. Barten in 1:03.76 and Weaver in 1:12.87.

In the distance races, Peach ran the 800 in 2:38.32, and J. Barten finished in 2:48.32. Escobedo finished the 1600m run in 6:19.77.

In the other field events, VanDusen threw the discus 109-07 and put the shot 35-09. Garvin had a jump of 13-09.50 in the long jump.

The weight person 4x100 relay team of VanDusen, John Jepson, Clifford and Weaver had a third place finish in 53.88.

The 4x100 team of N. Barten, Escobedo, P. Feldman and N. Feldman finished in 56.04. The 4x200 team of J. Barten, N. Barten, Escobedo and Garven finished with a time of 2:10.09. In the 4x400, N. Feldman, Keys, Sosa and Goddard finished the race in 4:15.14. The distance medley team of Waver, Garvin, N. Barten and Walshire finished in 4:49.15.

"Now if we can get everybody healthy, maybe we can get back there and have a decent 4x100, 4x200," Garcia said. The state track and field meet is held in the same venue as the Drake Relays.
