Baseball holds one last bash

The West Liberty baseball team acknowledged the end of their season with an informal pool party. A few awards were given, including all-conference and all-district recognition.

Brett Becker, one of the team's two seniors, received two first-team post-season awards. He was first team All Conference for the River Valley Conference, and he was first team All District for District 11. He was picked as first team as a utility player in both the RVC and the District.

Other Comets receiving RVC awards were Sergio Zamora, the team's other senior, and Ryan Alpen, a junior. Each received honorable mention.

Becker was Hitter of the Year, Pitcher of the Year and MVP for the Comets.

Comet Awards were given to Joe Baker, Josh Walshire, Austin Newton and Austin Goddard.

The Comets finished the 2014 season with a 4-20 record. The starting lineup this season included two eighth graders, two freshmen and two sophomores for many of the games. The team should only get better in coming years, but they will certainly miss their seniors.

The Comets' four wins were against Columbus (22-5), Mid-Prairie (8-3), Durant (5-0) and West Branch (2-0).

Except for the blowout at Columbus Junction, Becker was the pitcher of record in the wins. Becker did pitch an inning in relief in the Columbus game. Tanner Mueller pitched for the win at Columbus Junction. In the two shutouts, Becker went the distance as pitcher.
