Bears beat Comets

The West Liberty Comets boys' basketball team put up a good fight, but a disastrous second quarter cost them a potential win over West Branch Feb. 3 at West Branch.

"I thought we played a good first quarter, had a little lead after one, then the second quarter was rough on us," West Liberty Head Coach James Laughlin said. "We talked about it at halftime, and we came out in the third quarter and the fourth quarter and we executed. I'm really proud of our defense tonight.

"We held (Cooper) Kabela to his average, but at least we held (Beau) Cornwell to 11. They made some free throws in the end to seal us away.

"I'm proud of our guys for their defensive effort. They gave it all they got. Offensively, we finally got some shots to go down. Once we didn't turn the ball over, we got good shots. I didn't sub the second half. (One usual West Liberty starter did not dress.) I like to keep our guys fresh. We missed some free throws in the middle of the third quarter. If we'd been a little more fresh, maybe we'd connect on those.

"It is what it is. Colton (Kaalberg) came in and did a nice job in the first half."
