The West Liberty Comets softball team made it all the way to the Regional Final game July 10 at Davenport against Davenport Assumption.

"I told them right after the game they had nothing to hang their heads about. They were in it for a few innings, then it kind of snowballed.

"We got behind in the count a couple times and had to throw the ball where they wanted to see it. They hit the ball pretty well. They're a good-hitting team. I like my teams to hit it in the gaps, and (Davenport Assumption) did it even with two outs. That hurt us.

"If you don't score runs, you don't win. If you get outhit 17-3, you're not going to win many ballgames."

DA coach Ron Ferill: We'd heard a lot of good things about West Liberty from the standpoint of how the kids fight and how they stay in it for seven innings," Davenport Assumption Head Coach Ron Ferrill said.

"So we expected a battle all the way to the end. I realize the scoreboard may not show that, but we did get that. Their kids stayed focused, and they fought hard. They gave us good competition. We're just really balanced, really loaded from top to bottom. We have more speed than any team they've seen all year, more power than any team they're probably seen all year.
