Comets drop double-header

The West Liberty baseball team (8-18) lost both games of a double-header at West Liberty in July to the visiting Regina Regals (24-7).

Brayton Rock was the starting pitcher for the Comets. The first Regina batter grounded out to second baseman Will Esmoil. The next batter singled and took second base on a passed ball. The runner scored as the next batter reached on an error.

A single and a double scored another run. A pop out to Esmoil and a pop out to first baseman Justis Dengler ended the half-inning.

Michael Hartman got a one-out single to center field, but a fly out to center and a line out to second base left him stranded.

There was no score in the second. The Regals were retired in order on a groundout to Esmoil, a pop out to the shortstop A.J. Lenz, and a fly out to Michael Hartman in center field.

In the bottom of the second, Joe Baker singled on a liner to center field. Jackson Gingerich had a bunt single. Brent Meyers sacrificed the runner to second and third for the first out. A groundout to the pitcher and a strike out ended the inning with a 2-0 Regina lead.

In the top of the third, Regina scored four more runs. The first batter drew a base on balls. A strikeout and another walk made it two on and one out.

The next batter hit a homerun to scored three runs. The next batter singled and stole second base while the next player was at bat. A single send the runner to third, and he scored on a wild pitch.

The runner at first went to second then went too far. He was caught in a pickle between Rock and third baseman Seth Feldman. S. Feldman got the tag for the out. A pop out was the third out.

The Comets went quickly in the bottom of the third. The first batter struck out. Hartman got a bunt single but was caught stealing for the second out. A groundout to first base ended the inning. Regina had a 6-0 lead.

The fourth inning was scoreless. Regina got single before a pop out to Esmoil, a groundout to Lenz, and a fly out to right fielder Baker ended the half-inning.

Noah Feldman led off the bottom of the fourth with a single. Baker grounded into a fielder's choice, and N. Feldman was out at second base.

With Gingerich at bat, Baker advanced to second on a wild pitch. Gingerich reached on a fielder's choice, and Baker was caught in a pickle and tagged out. Brett Meyers drew a base on balls, but the next batter grounded out to end the inning.

The Regals scored two insurance runs in the top of the fifth. A walk and a hit batsman started the inning. Talen Dengler came in to pitch. A walk loaded the bases.

A single scored a run. The next batter hit into a fielder's choice, and the runner was forced out at hoe for the first out. A groundout to the shortstop scored a run. And a groundout to second base was the third out.

In the bottom of the fifth, Hartman got a two-out base on balls. A groundout ended the inning. Regina had an 8-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth, the first batter popped out to Gingerich, the catcher. Justis Dengler made an unassisted out at first base for the second out. A hit batsman was left stranded after stealing second base on a line out to N. Feldman in left field.

N. Feldman reached on an error on the Regina third baseman to start the bottom of the sixth. Baker hit into a fielder's choice, and N. Feldman was out forced out at second base.

The next batter flied out to left field. Meyers took a base when he was hit by a pitch, but the Comets left two runners on after a groundout.

Regina's first batter in the top of the seventh was hit by a pitch. A fly out to Baker in right field, a strikeout, and fly out ended the half-inning.

West Liberty needed to score in the bottom of the seventh, but they didn't. A groundout, a fly out, and the next batter was called out for being out of the batters box.
