Boys battle Assumption

The West Liberty Comets baseball team lost 11-1 to a very good Davenport Assumption team in five-and-a-half innings July 14 at Washington.

"They (Davenport Assumption) hit it. We didn't make any errors," West Liberty Head Coach Troy Wulf said. "There's a reason they're the number one team in the state. What do you do? Our kids fought. They played to the end. There's no question about that. We actually swung the bats well against one of the best pitchers in the state. We didn't have enough.

"The seniors did a nice job of leading us all year. The last couple of years, they did a nice job. They're reliable. They do things the way you should do them. They're good kids, they're good students. They're good people. They're good athletes, and they're what you want to coach."

In the top of the first, the Comets had one baserunner. With two outs, Justis Dengler was hit by a pitch. The next batter struck out to leave Dengler on base.

The Knights scored their first run in the bottom of the first. The first Assumption batter grounded out to second baseman Justis Dengler who threw to first baseman Race Oepping for the out.

The next batter double and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. He scored on a ground out. The batter grounded out to AJ Lenz who threw to Oepping for the out.

The next batter was hit by a pitch. The next batter hit into a fielder's choice. Shortstop A.J. Lenz fielded the ball and threw to second basement Justis Dengler for the third out.

The Comets were retired in order in the top of the second on a strikeout, a fly out, and another strikeout.

Davenport Assumption had a five-run second inning. The first batter flied out to Joe Baker in right field. The next batter singled.

Another single put runners at first and second. The runners advanced on a passed ball. A base on balls loaded the bases with Knights. A double scored two runs, and another double scored two more runs.

The next batter grounded out to Oepping at first, advancing a runner to third base. The runner at third scored on a wild pitch. The next batter flied out to Noah Felman in left field for the third out.

In the top of the third, Seth Feldman was hit by a pitch. The next batter hit into a field'er's choice, and S. Feldman was forced out at second base.

A strikeout ended the inning.

The Knights scored another run in the bottom of the third. The first batter flied out to Baker in right field. The next batter was hit by a pitch.

He stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. A sacrifice fly scored the run. After a single and a hit batsman, a groundout to Lenz ended the inning. The Knights led the Comets 7-0.

West Liberty scored a run in the top of the fourth. Dengler singled with one out. The next batter flied out for the second out. A double by Baker scored Dengler. The next batter grounded out to end the half-inning. The score was 7-1.

In the Assumption half of the fourth, the first batter grounded out to third baseman S. Feldman. The next two batters singled.

The next batter hit into a fielder's choice to S. Feldman. The runner was forced out at third. A pop out to S. Feldman at third base ended the inning.

Oepping was walked to lead off the fifth inning. The next batter hit into a double play. A groundout ended the half-inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, a walk and a double scored a run. Another double scored another run. A fly out to N. Feldman and a groundout to Lenz put a runner at third base for Assumption.

The runner scored on a wild pitch. The next batter hit a double but was caught stealing third to end the inning. The Comets trailed 10-1.

Michael Hartman hit a one-out double in the top of the sixth. Dengler walked. Hartman was caught stealing, then a strikeout ended the half-inning.

Two hit batsmen, a single and a wild pitch ended the game with an 11-1 score.

"I was pleased with the way we played," Davenport Assumption Head Coach Billy Argo said. "I thought we were pretty discipled at the plate, and made the plays on defense."

Pitching: Daniel Powers pitched six innings and got the win. He gave up one earned run on three hits. He walked two and struck out eight.

The Comets lost their final regular-season game on the road. Justis Dengler and Joe Baker each had a hit.
