On Tuesday, Jan. 23, the West Liberty Comets girl’s basketball hosted the state ranked Iowa City Regina Regals in West Liberty on Senior Night.

Samantha Kelley was recognized as the lone senior as the #7 Regals would take one from the home team and win 67-37.

West Liberty would strike first as they got the opening tip and Janey Gingerich drove to the basket and made a layup and put the host team up to a quick 2-0 lead.

The Regals three point shooting was on the mark as they knocked five shots from behind the arc in the first quarter.

The Comets hit a scoring drought in the quarter as the visitors went on a 14 point run. Janey Gingerich stopped the drought with a layup after a timeout by West Liberty head coach Al Fear with 4:50 to go in the period.

Macy Akers scored the next four points for West Liberty with two made free throws and a fast break layup. West Liberty was down at the end of the first quarter 23-10.

Regina started the second quarter as hot from the field as they ended the first. They made their first three attempts from behind the three point line to put them up 32-12.

The Comets hit another scoring slump and the Regals would take advantage of it. They went on a 20-4 run during that four minute span.

West Liberty was able to score the last four points of the half with Gingerich and Akers each making baskets. At the end of the second quarter the Comets were down 52-18.

At the start of quarter number three, Regina reeled off seven straight before Gingerich sank two shots from the charity stripe at the 5:59 mark to make the score 59-20.

The Regals pulled their starters and it was running clock with the Comets down by 39. Akers had a nice drive and layup for the last points of the third frame for West Liberty.

The Regals had a large lead at the end of the quarter 65-23.

The Comets rattled off three straight to begin the last quarter. At the 3:42 mark West Liberty had cut the lead to 65-26.

Without their starters in, Regina would only score twice more in the game, whereas West Liberty kept plugging away and ended the game with an 11-4 run.

In the run Akers had a nice dish to McIntosh for a layup, Gingerich put two shots in the basket and Isabel Morrison ended the game with a three pointer from the top of the key.

The final score would be 67-37 in favor of the Regina Regals.

Junior Macy Akers would lead all Comet scorers with 20 points on the night. Freshman Janey Gingerich had another strong performance with adding 12 points to the cause.

Gingerich also hit the boards as she grabbed nine rebounds and Freshman Martha Pace chipped in with six boards on the evening.

West Liberty drops to 2-15 on the year. They finish the regular season with four road games. On Friday, January 26th, they traveled to Cascade and lost 55-26.

On Tuesday Jan. 30, they travel to Mid Prairie, Thursday, Feb. 1, to West Branch and finish the regular season at Clarence against North Cedar on Friday, Feb. 2.
