The West Liberty girls’ soccer team completed their week with perfection after a trio of wins. The Comets dominated Monticello on the road 10-0 before grabbing a pair of 2-1 victories over Williamsburg and Iowa City Regina.

The week started for the Comets with a road trip to Monticello.

The Panthers entered the match winless and the Comets were going to do everything they could to make sure it stayed that way.

The Comets took to the scoring column early, netting five goals in the first half. The potent Comet attack wouldn’t be slowed in the second half as they tallied an additional five to take a 10-0 mercy rule victory on the road.

Four Comets netted two goals, with braces coming from senior Nellie Stagg, junior Pearson Hall, sophomore Jacky Molina and freshman Bricsia Garcia-Vasquez.

Sophomore Katherine Barten and freshman Chandler Gingerich added the two additional goals for the Comets to bring the team total to 10.

On Thursday, the Comets played host to Williamsburg. It was 17 minutes into the match when the Comets netted their first of two on the night, the second coming three minutes later in the 20th minute.

The Raiders did look to pull the contest back in their control, their lone goal in the first half to cut their deficit proved not enough.

The Comet defense set the tone in the second half, as neither team was able to add to their tallies in the second half as the home team grabbed a 2-1 victory.

West Liberty ended its week with a matchup against Iowa City Regina that was moved from Iowa City to West Liberty due to the rain throughout the day.

The Regals grabbed their lone goal in regulation in the 13th minute as the teams remained tied 1-1 for the duration of the second half and through two overtime periods.

The Comets finished the contest in a penalty shootout, besting the Regals 4-2 in penalties to grab their third victory of the week.

Pearson Hall netted the Comets lone goal in regulation.

The Comets improved to 8-4 on the season and look to bring their regular season toward a close with a match on Monday against Anamosa on the road before closing their regular season that Friday at home against West Branch.

Despite a stellar record, the Comets are just 2-3 in conference play which puts them sixth in the River Valley Conference. Beckman Catholic (5-0), Anamosa (4-0) and Iowa City Regina (2-0) sit at the top of the table having yet to lose in conference.

Ranked battle goes wrong way

The West Liberty boys’ soccer team split the past week, capturing a 10-0 victory over Monticello to start the week, but falling at home to top-ranked Iowa City Regina 2-0 to close it.

On Monday, the Comets headed to Monticello to take on the Panthers.

West Liberty wasted no time getting on the board early as they netting five goals in the first half and matched the tally in the second half to take a 10-0 mercy rule victory.

Sophomore Uriel Andrade netted eight goals for the Comets in the lopsided victory while senior Pascual Pedro and junior Marco Ruvalcaba added their other two.

On Friday, the Comets battled the weather and the Iowa City Regina Regals on their home pitch in a top three ranked matchup.

The Class 1A No. 3 Comets struggled with the Regal press early as a number of turnovers deep in their defensive third eventually led to a Regal breakthrough in the sixth minute.

The Comets were able to settle into the remainder of the first half but missed of a number for clear cut chances, including a turnover deep in the attacking third that skipped wide of the post.

The Comets were unable to mount a comeback in the second half as the Regals netted a second goal and the Comets fell 2-0 to close the week.

The Comets sit at 7-3 on the season and will matchup against Maquoketa on Friday, Anamosa on Monday and Davenport West on Tuesday as they near the end of the regular season.

West Liberty sits in fourth place in the RVC standings, trailing the 4-0 Regals, 5- 0 West Branch Bears and 6-2 Tipton Tigers.
