The West Liberty boys’ golf team took full advantage of its home tournament last week by posting a runner-up team finish and two top eight individual finishes.

In the 10-school event, the Comets’ second-place score of 343 was better than a handful of conference foes including Mid-Prairie (344 — third place), Tipton (346 — fourth place) and Iowa City Regina (352 — fifth place).

West Branch got the win at this event with a team score of 332. Bear freshman McGavin Smith was the meet medalist with a 79.

For the Comets, junior Cole Daufeldt had the top team honors with a T3 79. Junior Cale Daufeldt also placed in the top 10, taking solo eighth with a score of 85.

Freshman Landon Wainwright had his best 18-hole round of the season, posting an 88 which was good for a T15.

Also scoring for the Comets was sophomore Perry Lehman with a 91 and T22.

Rounding out the Comets’ lineup was freshman Kaden Wiele (94 — T32) and senior Morgan Lehman (100 — T42).

Two days later, this crew improved on their scores with a second-place 342 team score at a triangular at Cedars Edge Golf Course.

There, they ended up getting the better of the Bears’ 348 team score, but neither team was sniffing Solon’s 311 score.

Despite the Spartans’ dominance, the Comets found two golfers inside the top five.

Cael Daufeldt had an exceptional round shooting a 77 and placing in solo second place behind Solon’s Isaiah Zoske’s 71.

Perry Lehman also had a great round, tying for fifth with an 81.

Other Comet golfers included Cole Daufeldt (90 — T17), sophomore John Daufeldt (94 — T21), freshman Cole Wagamon (97 — 26th) and freshman Ryan Laughlin (100 — 27th).

The Comets’ 429 team score was ahead of Monticello’s 444 and Wilton’s 457. Mid-Prairie won the meet with a 384 team score, just three strokes better than Tipton in second place.
