Comets taking eight to state

Successful year for track teams

The West Liberty High School track teams competed in Monticello Thursday, May 12, for their opportunity to compete in the Iowa state meet at Drake University in Des Moines.

The Comets of coaches Gus Garcia and Michael Hart will compete in five total events, including three for the girls and two for the boys.

The Comets girls qualified three groups and placed eighth overall as a team at their state qualifying meet.

Senior Macy Daufeldt found the top of the podium in the long jump along with second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15:42. Daufeldt is also part of the girls 4 X 100-meter shuttle hurdle relay team consisting of teammates Sydney Rivera, Laney Esmoil and Rylee Goodale, finishing in 1:08.49 behind Cascade, which finished at 1:07.80. Durant was third at about two seconds slower, followed by Beckman Catholic, Northeast and Tipton.

The boys send Caleb Wulf, who captured gold in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15:49. He will join Jahsiah Galvan, Ryker Dangler and Jayce McHugh in the 4 x 100-meter shuttle hurdle relay, which finished first in a time of 1:01.49.

The state meet starts Thursday, May 19, with the boys shuttle hurdle team hitting the track first at 2:40 with girls later on that night at 7:40. Daufeldt will hit the long jump pit around 4:30 p.m.

On Friday the individual hurdlers will compete, with Wulf leading off at 3:20 p.m. and Daufeldt following immediately after. Finals will follow on Saturday.
