West Liberty students attend Iowa Latina Youth Leadership Conference in Iowa City

On Friday April 21, 10 students from West Liberty High School attended the Seventh Annual Latina Youth Leadership Conference (LYLC) at the University of Iowa.

LYLC provides a safe, fun, and educational environment in which young Latina leaders can learn and grow. The conference provided the opportunity for young women to interact with others from their community, take college preparedness workshops and engage in discussions about academic barriers affecting Latina women. Participants had the opportunity to learn about issues affecting adolescence and discover solutions that will empower them to succeed.

One of the most memorable highlights of the conference was the keynote speaker Kenia Calderon Ceron. Kenia is an immigrant woman from El Salvador and the VP/Bilingual Business Development Director at GreenState Credit Union.

She gave a powerful message about her story to becoming her. She shared to students about visualizing the woman they want to become and thinking about how their possibilities are endless. Additionally, Nancy "Rusty" Barceló, the first latina woman who obtained a PhD from the University of Iowa and one of the founders of the Latino Native American Cultural Center (LNACC) read a poem to attendees and talked about how in her time. t

There were maybe 10 Latino people that they were able to recruit to attend the University of Iowa but seeing a room full of young Latinas seeking the opportunity for higher education makes her believe that times are changing. She encouraged students to think about their future and how education can open many doors for them.

During the conference, there were college students from Iowa State and UIowa facilitating workshops that promoted women's empowerment, self-esteem, leadership skill development, and higher education.

One of the sessions was with the Women in Science and Engineering from Iowa State University.

They did an activity called "Protect the Pringle" where they used thought process. This engineering process helped them create a container safe enough to get the pringle through as series of unknown challenges.

There was a panel of current students majoring in law, medicine, engineering, education and more and they shared what the college experience has been like for them. Additionally, students got to experience a glimpse of college life and rode on CAMBUS, the University of Iowa's public transit system that provides bus service throughout the campus.

They also ate at one of the dining halls. It was a lot of fun to witness the students ride on public transportation for the first time. Some students were overwhelmed with all the food choices they had at the dining halls. It was also exciting to hear where students would take classes if they were to attend UIowa.

Current junior, Emy Fabian Ico was very moved by the motivational speaker and said she needed to hear that story. It really moved her to know that there are other people out there who were able to overcome adversity. Additionally, Emy was astounded walking through campus.

This was Emy's first tour at a university and it excited her to know that it could be a possibility to attend college.

This conference was a phenomenal opportunity for attendees since many of them will be the first ones in their family to attend college. Representation matters and seeing other young women pursue their dreams motivated them to do the same.
