David Nealson, 80

David Nealson age 80, died Thursday, Feb. 2, at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following an extended illness.

Private family services will be held with interment in the North Prairie Cemetery in West Liberty. Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello has taken David and his family into their care. Survivors include is his wife Judith, his children, Theron (Denise) , Jay, Tami (Fran) and Jody (Jason), seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Gary and his faithful watchdog, Boomer.

David Neal Nealson was born Aug. 27, 1942, in Iowa City. He was the son of Howard and Wilma Roth Nealson. David graduated from the West Liberty High School in 1961. He served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Stickle during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

David married Judith Lippelgoes on Sept. 1, 1962, at Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

He was a truck driver before starting with the Iowa City Fire Department in 1968. He retired from the department after being injured on the job in 1998.

David then did security work at the Outlet Mall at Williamsburg and later at the University of Iowa.

David and his father operated a farm tiling business and was a member of LICA association. He raised and raced trotting horses and also raised purebred sheep that he showed all over the country. He also liked doing calf-roping at local rodeos. He was proud of his Danish heritage and belonged to the Danish Brotherhood of America.
