Cuando la gente piensa en West Liberty, una de las primeras cosas que surge es nuestro programa bilingüe. Nuestra comunidad es muy afortunada de tener el programa dual más antiguo del estado. Antes de que terminara el año escolar, les pregunté a mis estudiantes de la clase de español de Dual 4 sobre sus experiencias en el programa. Escuchar de ellos ha sido útil para mejorar mi plan de estudios, pero también para validarlo porque me recuerda que mi trabajo es importante. Poder ser parte del desarrollo lingüístico de un estudiante ha sido muy divertido y no me arrepiento de haber elegido esta carrera.
Mis alumnos comenzaron en el programa dual cuando estaban en kínder y continuaron, incluso durante la pandemia. Cuando les pregunté por qué seguían en el programa, estas fueron algunas de las respuestas:

Me gusta estar en las clases de dual por los maestros que he tenido. Ellos son muy graciosos. -Jesse Aranday
Lo que más me ha gustado de estar en el programa de dual son las amistades que he construido con los estudiantes del programa. Tengo recuerdos de leer libros en español con mis compañeros de clase y las actividades que hacíamos cuando éramos pequeños. -Catherine Lara.
Me gusta poder estar en este programa con todos mis compañeros con los que empecé. Mi mejor recuerdo del programa es cuando teníamos un perro de terapia en mi clase de español de segundo grado. -Paige Werling
Lo que más me ha gustado de estar en este programa es aprender sobre las diferentes fiestas, tradiciones, comida y lo que pasó en el pasado. Recuerdo que mi clase se burló de Plum en el buen sentido. Obviamente ama a mi clase de graduación. -Avigaíl Hernández
Lo que me gustó del programa son los temas que aprendemos en la clase bilingüe. Un recuerdo que tengo de este programa es cuando me dieron un diploma como estudiante bilingüe de quinto grado. -Yamileth Delgado

Si no eres un hablante nativo, a veces puede ser intimidante estar en el programa bilingüe, especialmente cuando tienes que empezar a leer libros de capítulos largos y escribir ensayos persuasivos en español. Sin embargo, los estudiantes dieron consejos a quienes están pensando en abandonar el programa:
Un consejo que le daría a las personas que quieren salir del programa es que no lo hagan, es de gran ayuda hablar otro idioma. Puedes comunicarte con más personas y tener más oportunidades. -Danahy Zamora Medina

Debes permanecer en el programa para que se vea bien en las solicitudes de empleo y estudios -Abigail Hernandez Martinez
Dale otra oportunidad al programa porque da mucha información sobre diferentes culturas o países. -Lizbeth Alemán
El español es divertido y te ayudará en el futuro. Cuando trabajé en BP mucha gente no sabía inglés y cuando les hablaba en español se sorprendieron de que mi español fuera tan bueno. Recibo muchos elogios porque soy bilingüe. -Evan Beal
El consejo que le daría a las personas que quieren dejar el programa es que aprender español es un beneficio para ti y para los demás. El programa de dual es un programa que aprecio mucho y agradezco a los maestros que participan en el programa y todo el esfuerzo que ponen en él. -Catherine Lara
El consejo que tengo para los estudiantes que quieren dejar la clase Dual es que no se vayan. Deberían continuar. Podrías usar el idioma español algún día cuando realmente lo necesites como trabajo, grupos y espacios cotidianos. -Jesse Aranday
El español es un idioma difícil de conocer y entender. Sin embargo, nadie va a impedir que te vayas. Siempre puedes aprender español cuando quieras. El español también podría ayudarte a obtener trabajos que paguen mejores salarios. También puedes viajar a hermosos países de habla hispana sin ningún problema. -Avigaíl Hernández

Me gustaría que la escuela nos diera permiso para que la clase bilingüe vaya a los museos de arte de personas que son mexicanas o latinoamericanas como los museos en Muscatine. -Yamileth Delgado
Me encantaría aprender canciones en español. Casi nunca tengo tiempo para escuchar música en español porque me inclino hacia la música en inglés. -Dionni García Vásquez
Ojalá la escuela tuviera más clases de historia en español. Hay tantas cosas que han sucedido en el pasado para los hispanohablantes, pero la mayoría de los hispanohablantes en los Estados Unidos ni siquiera saben qué sucedió en el pasado. -Avigaíl Hernández

When people think of West Liberty, one of the first things that comes up is our Dual Language program. Our community is very fortunate to have the oldest dual program in the state.
Before the school year ended, I asked my Dual Language 4 students about their experience in the program. Hearing from them has been helpful in improving my curriculum, but also validating because it reminds me that my work matters. Being able to be a part of a student’s linguistic development has been so much fun and the best career choice I made.
My students started in the dual program when they were in kindergarten and continued, even during the pandemic. When I asked them why they were still in the program, these were some of the responses:
I continue in this program because it has helped me a lot and I enjoy it. Paige Werling

Students shared with me their favorite part of being in the Dual Language Program and some anecdotes.

"What I have liked most about being in the Dual Language program is the friendships I have built with the students of the Dual Language program. I have memories of reading books in Spanish with my classmates and the activities we did when we were little." Catherine Lara.
"I like being able to be in this program with all my peers that I started with. My best memory of the program was when we got a therapy dog in my second grade Spanish class." Paige Werling
"What I have liked most about being on this program is learning about the different festivals, traditions, food, and what happened in the past. I remember my class making fun of Plum in a good way. He obviously loves my graduating class." Avigail Hernandez
"What I liked about the program are the topics that we learn in the dual language class. One memory I have of this program is when they gave me my little diploma as a fifth grade dual language student." Yamileth Delgado
"My vocabulary expanded a lot and I learned about many things and among the ones I remember the most are the femicides." Abigail Hernandez Martinez
"If you’re not a native speaker, it can be intimidating at times to be in the program, especially when you have to start reading chapter books and writing persuasive essays in Spanish. Nevertheless, students gave advice to those who are thinking of quitting the program:
Some advice that I would give to people who want to leave the program is not to do so, it is a great help to speak another language. You can communicate with more people and have more opportunities." Danahy Zamora Medina
"I would tell them to hang in there because it's worth it." Paige Werling
"You need to stay in the program so that it looks good in your applications for work and school." Abigail Hernandez Martinez
"Give the program another chance because it gives a lot of information about different cultures or countries. Lizbeth Aleman
"Spanish is fun and it will help in the future. When I worked at BP a lot of people didn't know English and when I spoke Spanish they were shocked that my Spanish was so good. I get a lot of compliments because I am bilingual. " Evan Beal
"The advice I would give to people who want to leave the program is that learning Spanish is a benefit for you and for others. The Dual Language program is a program that I appreciate very much and I appreciate the teachers that take part in the program, and all the effort that they put into it. " -Catherine Lara
"Advice that I had for students who want to leave the Dual class is not to leave. They should continue. You could use the Spanish language one day when you really need it like work, groups, and everyday spaces." Jesse Aranday
"Spanish is a difficult language to know and understand. However, no one is going to stop you from leaving. You can always learn Spanish whenever you want. Spanish could also help you get jobs that pay better wages. You can also travel to beautiful Spanish-speaking countries without any problems." Avigail Hernandez

"I would like the school to give us permission for the dual language class to go to the art museums of people who are Mexican or Latin American like the museums in Muscatine." Yamileth Delgado

"I wish the school had more history classes in Spanish. There are so many things that have happened in the past for Spanish speakers, but most Spanish speakers in the United States don't even know what happened in the past." Avigail Hernandez
