Michael Schnieders, DSc es profesor asociado de bioquímica y biología molecular de la Universidad de Iowa. Recientemente, el profesor de la universidad le ofreció a Betsy Bejarano y Karla Velasco un puesto de asistentes de investigaciones este verano.
Ambas académicas trabajarán con seisestudiantes de posgrado y dos de pregrado en los laboratorios de la Universidad de Iowa. Les van a pagar para trabajar en los laboratorios y esta pasantía comienza a mediados de mayo y sigue hasta finales de julio.
Aprenderán una variedad de habilidades informáticas y también cómo analizar variantes genéticas en colaboración con el equipo de investigación de Schnieders. El laboratorio del Dr. Schnieders se centra en la teoría de la biofísica molecular y los algoritmos computacionales de alto rendimiento que se necesitan para reducir el tiempo y el costo de diseñar medicamentos y biomateriales orgánicos.
Su objetivo es ayudar a abrir la puerta a la medicina personalizada mediante el desarrollo de herramientas para mapear información genética en fenotipos moleculares. Esta oportunidad se presentó porque ambas jóvenes estaban involucradas en el Club de Ciencias en la Escuela Secundaria West Liberty.
Estaban trabajando en el proyecto de fibrosis quística del genoma humano y compitieron en la feria de ciencias en Cedar Rapids. Schniders quedó impresionado con su trabajo. Ed Moreno los recomendó para la oportunidad de investigación. La financiación estuvo disponible. Todo parecía funcionar para que las chicas obtuvieran esta oportunidad fenomenal.
Andrea Martinez, la asesora del Science Club, está muy orgullosa de estas jóvenes académicas y dice: "Ver a los alumnos expuestos a la ciencia y todas las maravillas que pueden descubrir con la ciencia realmente me emociona mucho. Esta es una de las razones por las que amo mi trabajo".
Entrevisté a Karla y Betsy para saber cómo se sentían acerca de la pasantía. Velsco dice: "Me siento muy honrada de tener esta increíble oportunidad porque la Sra. Martínez y el Dr. Ed Moreno me recomendaron. Estoy tan contenta de comenzar este trabajo que consiste en habilidades informáticas y análisis de variantes genéticas. Será genial colaborar con otros graduados y estudiantes universitarios. Sé que Betsy y yo hemos trabajado muy duro mientras estábamos en la escuela secundaria y definitivamente se traducirá en esta oportunidad de investigación."
Karla me explicó que tenía un deseo de estudiar Ciencias, Matemáticas, Ingeniería, y Tecnología a través de la exposición que tuvo en la escuela secundaria. Encontró una pasión por utilizar las matemáticas y aplicarlas a un escenario real. Se siente afortunada de tener estas oportunidades en un pueblo pequeño. Además, siente que está preparada para hacer la transición de preparatoria a la universidad. A lo largo de la escuela secundaria, la mayoría de sus clases eran de matemáticas y ciencias, a pesar de que eran desafiantes como
Química, Física, y Cálculo, la estudiante de último año se alegra de haberlas tomado. Velasco asistirá a la Universidad Estatal de Iowa (Iowa State) este otoño con una especialización en ingeniería no declarada. Vivirá en una Comunidad Viviente de Aprendizaje (LLC) para Mujeres en STEM e Ingeniería (WISE). Karla está encantada de estar rodeada de un grupo de apoyo.
Además, Karla recibió recientemente la beca George Washington Carver. Esta beca paga la matrícula completa. Los becarios de GWC tienen la oportunidad de participar en Carver Academy, convertirse en mentores de compañeros de GWC, completar horas de servicio comunitario, convertirse en asesores principales y más. Mientras Karla culmina su último año, su consejo para los estudiantes de secundaria es "retate a ti mismo, pero no te abrumes".
Bejarano es una joven participante del programa West Liberty Youth Dream Catchers y está ampliando sus horizontes para poder prepararse para un futuro en el que la educación superior se haga realidad.
Betsy actualmente está en su penúltimo año de la escuela secundaria. Se siente inmensamente orgullosa de lo que ha logrado. Ella dice: "¡Me gustaría agradecer a la Sra. Martínez y al Sr. Slemmons por involucrarme en el Club de Ciencias que me permitió llegar aquí! A medida que llega el momento de trabajar en el laboratorio de la Universidad de Iowa, estoy muy nerviosa pero emocionada de ver a dónde me lleva esto después. También estoy más que agradecida de poder hacer esto junto a Karla Velasco."
En la escuela primaria, Betsy estaba interesada en ser dentista o abogada, sin embargo, durante la escuela secundaria, comenzó a tener curiosidad sobre lo que podría hacer si pudiera usar Matemáticas y Ciencias en su vida cotidiana. Su amor por STEM comenzó a florecer allí y durante la preparatoria, continuó encontrando pasión por las matemáticas, por lo que agradece a todos sus maestros de matemáticas, incluidos el Sr. Iske, el Sr. Bartleson y la Sra. Harvey.
Esta joven académica también le gustaría tomarse un tiempo para agradecer al Sr. Lamb por guiarla a través de sus cursos de ciencias de segundo y tercer año, que incluyen Física y Química. Estos cursos son lo que la hizo esforzarse y la impusieron aún más a perseguir sus objetivos.
Bejarano aspira a continuar con su pasión por la ingeniería al inscribirse en Iowa State en el otoño de 2024. A medida que se acerca su último año, ha reflexionado sobre su tiempo en la escuela secundaria. A Betsy le hubiera gustado saber que no hay nada de malo en no estar nunca satisfecho con el lugar donde se encuentra uno y que siempre hay espacio para crecer. Su consejo para sus compañeros es "sigan estableciendo estándares para ustedes mismos... ¡no dejen que se sientan cómodos! Todo va a salir bien".
Con su experiencia, Betsy sabe que al final solo hay que manter la esperanza y ser agradecido por lo que hay en tu vida. Por último, Betsy debe su éxito a sus padres, Jesús y María Bejarano, por apoyarla siempre. Todo lo que hace es por ellos.
Michael Schnieders, DSc is an associate professor of biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of Iowa. Recently, he offered Betsy Bejarano and Karla Velasco a summer research assistant position. Both scholars will be working with 6 graduate and 2 undergraduate students at UIowa. This paid internship starts mid-May until the end of July. They will learn a variety of computer skills and also how to analyze genetic variants in collaboration with Schnieder's research team. Dr. Schnieders' lab focuses on molecular biophysics theory and high performance computational algorithms that are needed to reduce the time and cost of engineering drugs and organic biomaterials. Their goal is to help open the door to personalized medicine by developing tools to map genetic information onto molecular phenotypes. This opportunity presented itself because both girls were involved in Science Club at West Liberty High School. They were working on human genome cystic fibrosis project and competed at the science fair in Cedar Rapids. Schniders was impressed with their work. Ed Moreno recommended them for the research opportunity. Funding became available. Everything seemed to work out for the girls to get this phenomenal opportunity. Andrea Martinez, the advisor for Science Club is very proud of the girls and says, "seeing kids exposed to science and all the wonders they can discover with it really makes me so excited. This is one of the reasons I love my job".
I interviewed Karla and Betsy to find out how they felt about the internship. Velsco says, "I feel so honored to have this amazing opportunity because of Ms. Martinez and Dr. Ed Moreno that recommended me. I am really looking forward to this job that consists of computer skills and analyzing genetic variants in collaboration with other graduates and undergraduates. I know Betsy and I have worked very hard while in high school and it will definitely translate through with this research opportunity."
Karla explained to me that she had a desire for STEM education through exposure she had in high school. She found a passion for utilizing math and applying it to a real scenario. She feels fortunate enough to have these opportunities in a small town and feels prepared to transition into college. Throughout high school, the majority of her classes were math and science classes even though they were challenging such as Chemistry, College Physics, and Calculus, the senior is glad she took them. Velasco will be attending Iowa State University this fall with an undeclared engineering major. She will be living in an Living Learning Community (LLC) for Women in STEM and Engineering (WISE). Karla is delighted that she will be surrounded by a support group. Plus, Karla was recently awarded the George Washington Carver Scholarship. This scholarship is worth full undergraduate tuition. GWC Scholars have the opportunity to participate in Carver Academy, become a GWC peer mentor, complete community service hours, become lead advisors, and more. As Karla culminates her senior year, her advice to high schoolers is "challenge yourself, but don't overwhelm yourself."
Bejarano is a West Liberty Youth Dreamcatcher and is broadening her horizons so she can prepare for a future where higher education becomes a reality. Betsy is currently a junior in high school. She feels immensely proud of what she has accomplished. She says, " I'd like to thank Mrs. Martinez & Mr. Slemmons for getting me involved in Science Club which allowed me to get here! As the time comes for me to work at the laboratory at the University of Iowa, I am very nervous but excited to see where this leads me after. I am also beyond thankful to be able to do this alongside Karla Velasco". In elementary school, Betsy was interested in being a dentist or a lawyer however, during middle school, she began to be curious about what she could do if she could use math and science in her everyday life. Her love for STEM began to blossom there and during high school, she continued to find some passion in math, for which she thanks all of her math teachers including Mr. Iske, Mr. Bartleson, and Mrs. Harvey. Betsy would also like to take some time to thank Mr. Lamb for really guiding her through her sophomore and junior year science courses including physics and chemistry, which made her push herself and further drove her into chasing after my goals.
Bejarano aspires to continue her passion for engineering by enrolling at Iowa State in the fall of 2024. As her Senior year is coming up, she has reflected on her time in high school. Betsy would've liked to be assured earlier that there is nothing wrong with never being satisfied with where you are, & that there is always room to grow. Her advice to her peers is "keep setting standards for yourself…don't let you stay comfortable! It's all going to work out in the end, just stay hopeful & be grateful for what is in your life!."
Lastly, Betsy owes her success to her parents Jesus and Maria Bejarano for always supporting her. Everything she does is for them.
