Magaly Kivi, estudiante de último año de West Liberty High School, ganó recientemente la competencia de escritura de la Universidad del Norte de Iowa en la categoría de escritura creativa o crítica en español. Como premio, recibirá una beca de $500. La pieza que escribio será parte de un proyecto de publicación que está en marcha esta primavera. La escritora presentó un escrito creativo en español sobre el significado detrás de su nombre y cómo eso afecta su identidad.
Magaly es hija de Sonia y Shawn Kivi. Tiene tres hermanas y un hermano que se llaman Daisy, Jayleen, Kalea y Sisu. Sus otros padres son Francisco y Grecia Enrqiuez y con ellos tiene dos hermanas y dos hermanos llamados Yvett, Aileen, Santino y Joaquin.
Kivi ha estado muy involucrada en la escuela secundaria. Ha participado en muchos deportes extracurriculares como softbol, baloncesto, fútbol, voleibol y lucha libre. También esta en FFA (Futuros Rancheros de America) y NHS (Sociedad Nacional Honorifica). Además de las actividades extracurriculares, tiene una agenda apretada. Esta estudiante está tomando tres cursos de nivel avanzado.
Después de la secundaria, Magaly asistirá a la Universidad del Norte de Iowa y planea especializarse en educación primaria y regresar a West Liberty para enseñar. Le encantaría ser parte del equipo de educadores bilingües. Magaly se siente afortunada de haber sido parte del programa como estudiante y le encantaría completar el ciclo y unirse al equipo.
A medida que Magaly se acerca a la graduación, recuerda mucho su tiempo en la escuela secundaria. Se sorprende al ver lo rápido que han pasado estos cuatro años.
A pesar de que la pandemia pasó durante sus años de escuela secundaria, no perdió el tiempo y trató de aprovecharlo al máximo. Magaly recomienda a los estudiantes que van entrando a la secuendaria que se unan a todos los clubes y deportes que les interesen. El tiempo vuela rápido y antes de que te des cuenta, estás a punto de graduarte y no querrás mirar hacia atrás y arrepentirte de no haber hecho algo.
Sal de tu zona de confort y prueba algo nuevo. Crecerás enormemente y harás nuevos amigos. Mirando hacia atrás, Kivi está contenta de haber estado involucrada en las actividades escolares porque ha hecho amistades y muchos recuerdos de ir a prácticas, juegos, torneos y voleibol estatal.
Para esta estudiante de último año, significa mucho haber estado involucrada en su comunidad, especialmente en un pueblo pequeño único con una comunidad muy unida como West Liberty.
West Liberty High School senior Magaly Kivi recently won the a writing competition from the University of Northern Iowa in the Creative or Critical Writing Spanish category. As a prize, she will receive a $500 scholarship. Her submission will be part of a publication project that is underway this spring. Kivi has been very involved in high school. She has participated in many sports extracurriculars such as softball, basketball, soccer, volleyball, and wrestling. Additionally, she is involved in FFA (Future Farmers of America) and NHS (National Honor Society). Aside from the extracurriculars, she has a packed schedule. This scholar is taking three AP courses.
After high school, Magaly will be attending the University of Northern Iowa and plans to major in elementary education and come back to West Liberty to teach. She would love to be part of the dual-language team of educators. Magaly feels fortunate to have been a part of the program as a student and would love to come full circle and join the team.
As Magaly gets closer to graduation, she reminises a lot on her time in high school. She is shocked to see how quickly these four years have flown by. Despite the fact that the pandemic hit during her high school years, she did not waste her time and tried to make the best of it.
Magaly recommends incoming freshmen to join all the clubs and sports they are interested in. The time flies fast and before you know it, you are about to graduate and you wouldn't want to look back and regret not doing something. Get out of your comfort zone and try soemthing new. You will grow tremendously and make new friends. Looking back, Kivi is glad that she was involved in school activities because she has made friendships and many memories from going to practices, games, tournaments, and state volleyball.
