Miss Mai- a passionate educator
West Liberty has been so fortunate to have people from all corners of the world. In particular, our elementary school has had teachers from other countries such as Spain.
This year, we have been fortunate to have a young woman whose story and passion for teaching lights up our school district. I present to you Carmen Mailujié Rodríguez Zárate, or as everyone affectionately knows her, Mai or Miss Mai. She is our Spanish Language and Culture assistant.
She is originally from Burgos, a charming city in northern Spain. Burgos stands out for its medieval architecture that is intact. One of its best-known places is the Santa Maria Cathedral, which has been named a World Heritage Site.
Mai brings with her a mix of cultures and experiences. With a warm smile, Mai shares a little about herself, "My origins are Asian, I was born in China, but I was adopted when I was just 2 years old".
Mai reflects on her experience living for nine months in our town and says "I can attest that in this charming community, hospitality is created with threads of friendship and neighborliness."
For Mai, the difference between West Liberty and her beloved hometown lies in the breadth of entertainment options. "Burgos offers a greater variety of entertainment venues," she explains. "But in the end, all places have their own charm and cannot be compared."
I asked her that why did she go into teaching, and she proudly explained "I come from a family of teachers".
She talked about her process and mentioned "I always liked the idea of teaching, but it wasn't until my last year of high school that I knew I wanted to teach Spanish as a foreign language".
Her fondest memories of West Liberty are intertwined with her students, especially with the second-grade group nicknamed the Lemurs.
"They are charming, intelligent, playful and friendly children who welcomed me with love from the first second," Mai describes affectionately. "It's amazing to see the happiness on their faces when they realize they've done something right."
Mai had the joy of working with Miss Brown, an admirable teacher who awakens curiosity and love of learning in children. She also has the ingenuity and creativity to create lessons with exciting content. Recently, Mai had the opportunity to teach a lesson about Holy Week at the high school and middle school.
"It was a unique experience. The students were very interested and asked many questions about one of the most famous traditions in Spain. They were very respectful when hearing about cultural practices different from their own."
Mai's time in West Liberty has been like discovering a treasure. "My days here are full of stories, trips and valuable moments," she reflects. "Experiencing educational systems outside of Europe has been the perfect opportunity for my personal and professional growth."
The young educator adds that it was a great joy for her to be able to be in the classroom everyday sowing seeds of knowledge and reaching student's hearts.
Mai adds "I am deeply grateful for having witnessed their learning process and growth. The kids have given meaning to my short, but intense, stay."
At the end of our conversation, Mai shares her gratitude toward the West Liberty community. "I am very grateful to have had this unique experience," she says with tears in her eyes. "Good things come to an end, but it is the lived experiences that live forever in our soul and heart for they are like valuable objects."
Mai came to our community with a suitcase full of dreams and she got more out of it than imagined. West Liberty has been a reminder of the beauty and human warmth found in the most unexpected places.
Miss Mai- una apasionada educadora
West Liberty ha sido tan afortunado de tener personas de todos los rincones del mundo. En especial, nuestra escuela primaria ha tenido profesores de otros países como España.
Este año, ha sido afortunado de tener a una mujer cuya historia y pasión por la enseñanza ilumina a nuestro distrito escolar.
Les presento a Carmen Mailujié Rodríguez Zárate, o como todos la conocen cariñosamente, Mai o Miss Mai. Ella trabaja apoyando la enseña de la lengua y cultura hispanohablante.
Originaria de Burgos, una encantadora ciudad al norte de España. Burgos se destaca por su arquitectura medieval que está intacta.
Uno de sus lugares más conocidos es la Catedral de Santa Maria que ha sido nombrada da como Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Mai trae consigo una mezcla de culturas y experiencias.
"Mis orígenes son asiáticos, nací en China, pero fui adoptada cuando apenas tenía 2 años", comparte Mai con una sonrisa cálida.
Mai reflexiona su experiencia viviendo por nueve meses en nuestro pueblo y dice "Puedo afirmar que en esta encantadora comunidad, la hospitalidad se crea con hilos de amistad y vecindad."
Para Mai, la diferencia entre West Liberty y su querida ciudad natal radica en la amplitud de las opciones de ocio. "Burgos ofrece una mayor variedad de lugares de entretenimiento", explica. "Pero al final, todos los lugares tienen su propio encanto y no se pueden comparar".
¿Por qué la docencia? "Vengo de una familia de maestros", explica Mai con orgullo. "Siempre me gustó la idea de enseñar, pero no fue hasta mi último año de instituto que supe que quería enseñar español como lengua extranjera".
Sus recuerdos más preciados de West Liberty están entrelazados con sus estudiantes, especialmente con el grupo de segundo grado apodado los Lemurs.
"Son unos niños encantadores, inteligentes, juguetones y amigables que me acogieron con cariño desde el primer segundo", describe Mai con afecto. "Es increíble ver la felicidad en sus caras cuando se dan cuenta de que han hecho algo bien".
Mai tuvo la dicha de trabajar con Miss Brown, una admirable docente que despierta la curiosidad y amor por aprender en los chicos. Además tiene un ingenio y creatividad para elaborar lecciones con contenido emocionante. Recientemente, Mai tuvo la oportunidad de enseñar una lección sobre Semana Santa en la prepa y secundaria.
"Fue una experiencia única. Los alumnos estaban muy interesados y hacian muchas preguntas sobre una de las tradiciones más famosas de España. Fueron muy respetuosos al escuchar sobre practicas culturales distintas a las de ellos".
Para Mai, su tiempo en West Liberty ha sido como descubrir un tesoro. "Mis días aquí están llenos de historias, viajes y momentos valiosos", reflexiona.
"Experimentar los sistemas educativos fuera de Europa ha sido la oportunidad perfecta para mi crecimiento personal y profesional".
Agrego que para ella fue una gran dicha poder estar cada día en el aula sembrando semillas de conocimiento y llegar a sus corazones.
Mai dice "por eso agradezco profundamente haber sido testigo de su evolución. Ellos han dado sentido a mi corta, pero intensa, estancia".
Al final de nuestra conversación, Mai comparte su gratitud hacia la comunidad de West Liberty. "Estoy muy agradecida por haber vivido esta experiencia única", dice con emoción.
"Lo bueno se acaba, pero son las experiencias vividas lo que perdura en el alma y en el corazón como un valioso objeto".
Mai vino a nuestra comunidad con una maleta llena de sueños. West Liberty ha sido un recordatorio de la belleza y el calor humano que se encuentra en los lugares más inesperados.
