LeRoy Maynard Marcus Jr., age 103, of Oak Ridge, N.C., formerly of West Liberty, passed away peacefully on Friday, Nov. 1, 2024, at his daughter’s home in Oak Ridge.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7 (today), at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty, with visitation one hour prior. Burial

LeRoy was born on Nov. 10, 1920, in Ellsworth, Iowa, to parents LeRoy Sr. and Johanna (Braland) Marcus. After graduating from Ellsworth High School, he proudly served in the United States Army during World War II. On March 31, 1951, he married Edna Hinton, a relationship that began on the roller-skating rink where they first met.
LeRoy’s early years were spent farming, and he later worked at a turkey processing plant in Ellsworth. In 1956, he moved to West Liberty, where he began a long career as a government meat grader at Louis Rich Foods, retiring in 1980. LeRoy embarked on a second career with Edna as gate attendants at Corps of Engineers campgrounds, where they worked until LeRoy’s final retirement at age 90.
He was a member of Fountain of Life Lutheran Church in Kernersville, N.C., and enjoyed camping, fishing and watching the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs.
LeRoy is survived by his daughters, Denise Marcus of Greensboro, N.C., and DeAnn Marcus (partner Jimmy Vaughn) of Oak Ridge. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Mike Becker, Brian (Vicki) Becker, Jeremy (Jenni) Becker, Melinda Becker, and Heather (Jeremy) Fisher; his great-grandchildren: BreAnna, DeAnna, Josephine, Nathan, Noah, Wyatt, Lydia, Maliya, Brixton, Keila, Kierston, Braydon, Isabella, and Kristen; and his great-great-grandchildren: McKinzie, Grayson, Leo, Easton and Wrenleigh. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Edna in July 2023; granddaughter, Holly Lynn Richardson; and his brothers, Vernon, Mervin, and Merle Marcus.
