Latino Culture Column

Mi primer año como columnista

Educator experiences first year as Latino Culture columnist for Index

Posted

ENGLISH VERSION

Since I started writing in the Index almost six months ago, I have tried to avoid writing in the first person. I wanted (and still want) the focus of these articles to be on the great people, events, and customs that make up the Latino experience here in West Liberty.

But since the calendar has turned to the year 2022, I thought it would be the right time to review some of the wonderful things that I have seen over the past six months, and look forward to what I hope to see and hear in the six months that await us:

– I wanted to start my series writing about the “roots”, of the “first Latina families” that settled here in West Liberty. (I put it in quotes because with my limited time, a full investigation would have been impossible.) I was surprised that the first families did not usually come from Durango, but from Coahuila, and I quite enjoyed interviewing the Escobedo, Zamora and García families.

– In August, I took advantage of my new status as a “reporter” to attend the first Fiesta Latina at the West Liberty Fairgrounds, where my wife and I were able to enjoy Latin music, food and dance with four musical groups, including the Alacrán, a group of Duranguense musicians from Chicago that has won a Grammy Award.

– In September I was able to cover the Children's Festival in West Liberty, followed by MORE Latin music; again I ate and danced a lot….

– For Latin Heritage Month, I wrote a series of articles that dealt with the independence of the Spanish-American countries from Spain, with a special focus on Mexico and Central America.

– In November, I had the opportunity to interview and learn about the art of Yohamy Narváez, a young Ecuadorian whose grandmother has been here in West Liberty for quite some time.

– Also in November, I was able to meet two of the new West Liberty City Council members, Omar Martínez and Dana Domínguez.

– Finally, in December, I had the opportunity to speak with Father Guillermo Treviño of the St. Joseph Catholic Church and my colleague Vanessa Espinoza about the MANY celebrations that the Latino community celebrates, such as Our Lady of Guadalupe, Christmas, New Years, and the Epiphany.

Now that we have greeted 2022, there is still a lot to learn and report. I don't want to make promises that are not certain to be kept, but here are some things that are on my “radar”, that may appear here in the weeks and months to come:

– New businesses and projects led by people from the community

– Reports on sports and hobbies that Latinos enjoy, such as cooking, soccer, or boxing.

– Reports of stories, events and notable personalities of the community

– Research on the gret sub-communities within our community, such as others in Mexico, Central America, and Puerto Rico

This, of course, is not an exhaustive list. I would love to have more ideas of what to write. You can always reach me at my email, mplum@wl.k12.ia.us, or by calling Tim Evans of the Index at 319-627-2814.

Our best ideas come from you, our readers!
